Re: SP on Broncos vs. Saints Analytics

Once again a headline totally misstates the crux of the article. Nowhere in the article does Payton state (as the headline implies) that the "Broncos (are) 'Far Ahead' of Saints" in analytics. Here's the entire quote once again:

“The analytics department is something that is on a different level here,” Payton said during his pre-draft presser on Thursday. “I’m like that driver of a new car that still hasn’t figured out how to get the seat warmers on. It’s pretty impressive, and it’s new for me in a good way. I’m talking about the efficiency of the process. We weren’t as far ahead [in New Orleans] when we were looking at some of these players as to being able to pick up and access the information as quickly.

Where does Payton state the Broncos are "far ahead" of the Saints? What he is saying is that the Saints draft process, which he oversaw in New Orleans, was not as "far ahead" or "advanced" in analytics. That is not a diss against the Saints and what was his own process, but simple fact.

SP can be a meathead... trust me. I used to bust his chops at the meat counter. He needs to watch his meat and STFU.

I agree with The Meat Guy. Who cares.

Sean Payton is the Head Coach for Denver now.

I just don't get why people out there (twitter world, etc.) even care about some trivial statement like this. It's as though people search for reasons to be butthurt these days.

Well, the “Who cares” is unknown at this point. Again, I’m not Making a big deal about it, but it is out there on social media now. You’ve got a Super Bowl winning, potential Hall of Fame coach saying that his new team is ahead of his old team in some aspect. That could have an impact on things or not. But either way, it was a shot that did not need to be fired. He could have phrased things otherwise should he have chosen to. He’s not a dummy, it was deliberate.

Edit…I can remember players making such comments. Not SB winning coaches.

Sorry, Boston, but I still do not see where Payton said that the Broncos were "ahead" of the Saints. What he said exactly was, "We weren’t as far ahead [in New Orleans] when we were looking at some of these players as to being able to pick up and access the information as quickly." That clearly means that he felt his draft process with the Saints was not as far ahead or advanced technologically as they could have been. I really don't see that as any slight against the Saints. It was his own process. If anything it can only be deemed a shot at himself. But I even doubt that. It was a simple statement of fact. Nothing derogatory as far as I can see. If he saw the draft process was lacking in any manner then he is simply pointing out where he himself was lacking in his own draft process design.

Yes it's out there on social media and the only ones that are making any of it, as I pointed out, are those out there that are always looking for something to get butthurt about. The click baiters for one. They really need to chill. :D

Who knows? Payton may have had the Saints staff using excel spreadsheets or some sort to store player info while some other teams are using SQL databases with more easily defined query capabilities. It sounded like something along those lines when he was quoted as saying "we weren't as far ahead" when it came to "being able to pick up and access the information as quickly."

Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks? :D It was probably the way he had run things for years and never saw the need to upgrade the process.

The Broncos may have a more up to date information processing system than the Saints but history shows that we draft better than they do. I like Sean Payton but he's their head coach now. Not ours. He may not have the eye for talent that we think he does. Maybe the Saints analytics department kicks ass and we draft better without Payton's mad scientist approach.
