Everyone said Peat and Thomas were both gone this offseason. Instead they were both restructured to avoid much smaller dead cap hits than $55 million. There is zero chance Carr won’t be on the roster in 2026 if Loomis is the GM. Its not hate it reality. Not restructuring a contract that big and taking the cap medicine is not in Loomis’ DNA. We would have to go full rebuild to part with Carr or else go into austerity mode to stop restructuring and take painful cap hits over time and neither is happening under Loomis. We will defer every cap dollar we can which will make the dead cap to cut bigger every year which will lead to a more urgent restructure every year. |

Jordan Love is set to take over in GB. He's been the backup for a few years. The same situation may happen here with Haener. |

Re: Saints Pick 4.19 - QB Jake Haener
Personally, I am expecting Derek Carr to be our starting QB for most, if not all, of the next decade. I also expect that over that period of time we will draft four or five more "Haeners" which will collectively fill the vital role of inexpensive QB backup. I would guess that 95% of all QB's acquired outside of the first round of the draft never become fulltime starters in the NFL. Several of those do start a number of games here or there and more go on to have solid careers as backups. But, as we all know, it is still extremely critical that you have quality backup at QB at all times. If Haener develops into something more, then fine. Maybe we can do what New England did trading off their developed backups while sticking with their proven vet for years. It seemed to have worked for them quite well with Cassel, Hoyer, Garoppolo, Brissett, Stidham, and Gabbert.

I would love it if the Saints let Drew come in every year for the QB challenge in Minicamp. It won't happen but it would be cool.

Don't know much about Jake @ Fresno St.
Most scouts gave him 6th/7th round grades so ... Possible reach (see Ian Book)? No clue. |

I really like the Moxy of this young man. He's sharp and reminds me of somebody else who wore number 9. I want to see Drew and Britney Brees adopt him.

Re: Saints Pick 4.19 - QB Jake Haener
Talking with my 90 year old, wise, guru-like, Saints loving father, I feel somewhat better about this pick. My dad played minor league baseball and gave me an interesting take. In baseball, you have lots of pitchers on your team. And even more pitchers that try to make your team. That’s because throwing a pitch is the key part of the game. But it’s key for the hitters as well, because the better pitching they face, the better their hitting skills get.
So, the football translation is throughout training camps with 90 players and preseason you need probably (not counting Taysom Hill) 5 guys to throw enough passes to 7 WRs and 5 TEs trying to make the team without their arms falling off. The 4th string defenses get better facing off against better QBs as well. So even if he doesn’t pan out into an NFL QB, he might be a good addition to help the team anyway because QB is they key position. That said, This is still my least favorite pick by far. |

Re: Saints Pick 4.19 - QB Jake Haener
This makes me feel a little better about the Haener selection. We can now carry Haener on the 53 and designate him as emergency QB WITHOUT having him take up an active spot. This is a good thing and I hope we take advantage of it. Furthermore, there's no reason for the team to consider Taysom as an emergency QB any longer and take his focus away from TE/skill player responsibilities.
