Most of the calls were about getting to know each other and feeling out what it would be like to work together, and Carr came away impressed by Thomas’ dedication to getting back to his old self -- highlighted by his being named the 2019 Offensive Player of the Year.

“That guy, just his mentality alone," Carr said of Thomas. "The injuries, it’s football. The injuries, 100 percent, they’re going to happen. I think we can all agree, he’s someone that dominates recovery. He’s not someone who’s going to cut corners or anything like that. So you trust that he’ll be as ready as he can be.

"The football player, the mentality, that’s the thing I fell in love with, with him. I sat there on the phone, and I remember two, three, four days after we were on the phone, I just kept telling my wife, ‘I love that guy. I love his mentality.’ How do you not want to play football with that guy?”

Thomas immediately felt like he’d found a kindred spirit in how Carr viewed the game.

“He wants to win just like I want to win," Thomas said. "He’s just very disciplined. He’s on top of his stuff. He came here for a reason. That’s the same type of confidence I hear in his voice -- he came here for a reason, he came here to win. You can feel the sense of urgency. He loves ball. It’s not hard working with him. ... He tells me what to do, I tell him where I’m going to be, and we’re on the same page. We can execute at a high level.”

This time of year and in the more recent Saints history, the sky is almost always the limit. Yet, it does feel as if it means more this year than last year.

IMO all eyes are on OC Pete C. You now have a solid/experienced QB, weapons at WR/TE, RB & Mr. Football Taysom Hill.

Now Derek Carr can stress about correctly pronouncing Tchoupitoulas Street.

The quarterback has learned the language of the New Orleans Saints. He’s no longer relating or referencing his time with the Las Vegas Raiders in order to understand. He’s on the same page as his new coaches and teammates.

“I’m pretty far along from where I feel like I was, knowing the system and things like that,” Carr said. “You never want to feel like you have it all figured out. But I feel confident with where I’m at.”

Carr has been in New Orleans for a little more than three months. The Saints have completed 10 days of voluntary organized team activities in that time. Carr worked out in every single one, asking questions and absorbing information.

That’s a rather quick time to break his mental muscle memory from the Raiders, considering he spent all nine seasons of his career so far there. Carr’s goal was to have the lingo down before training camp, maybe even minicamp. Mission accomplished.

When OTAs began, and Carr was first expressing these transition thoughts, Saints coach Dennis Allen did note the Saints’ offensive schemes and concepts are rather similar to those Carr already knew, so that helped ease the learning curve.

“I think he's been awesome,” Allen said. “I think it's been great to see. I think Derek's done a really good job, and I think our receivers have done a heck of a job. He kind of raises the expectation of what those guys have to be able to do. There's a certain position that he wants them to be in and a certain way that he wants them to run the routes, and our guys have worked really well together to try to build that chemistry.”
