Whew. Not a great way to start my day. I would argue that the Johnathan Sullivan pick was worse than the Ricky Williams pick, though.

Indeed. Not only is it too easy if a shot, but Ricky finished his career the 5th all time leading rusher for the team up to that point. At least he produced some. IDK why but the Baptiste pick always stuck in my craw. A second round pick on a guy with 1 career NFL tackle.

Throughout the entire history of the draft there have always been a fair share of total busts and there will always be the occasional bust, regardless of what round or what franchise is involved. It is the nature of the beast. I suppose that's why I have never understood the obsession with the related draft capital of any player that is drafted. The NFL draft has always been and will always be an inexact science. I'm not saying there is no skill involved, but even the very best strike out from time to time.

Ricky Williams worst draft pick? I mean seriously, nothing can be worse than using a 1st round, 11th overall pick on Russell Erxleben...

Ricky did produce and so did Erxleben. While I agree spending a number 1 for a kicker is not advisable, the Raiders did OK with their #1 draft pick special teamer.

Sully has to be the worst since he cost us two number 1s.

I am glad we have Jeff Ireland now. Hope he never leaves us.

OK, I have to ask, what did Erxleben do? He was a failed kicker and a very below average punter?

He had a cool name. Not as cool as Guido Merkens, of course, but still cool.

Agreed not worthy of a Number 1 pick ... but he was not a Jonathan Sullivan. He'd be an UDFA today.

One of many Payton head scratchers.

He was so enamoured by the Seahawks Defense that shut us down and went onto win the SB, that he genuinely thought SJB was the next Richard Sherman.

Derek Carr is good but Drew was great at motivating people around him.

Thank you Jeff Ireland.

I hope Denver can keep Payton's fingers out of the defense entirely. He can't pick defensive players to save his soul.

Re: New Orleans Saints Hall of Shame: Worst breakup and more

Here are some from the Beginning:

In 1967 The Saints committed a colossal blunder by trading the first overall selection to the Baltimore Colts for Gary Cuozzo, the backup quarterback to Johnny Unitas. Cuozzo began the season as the Saints' starter, but lost the job to expansion draftee Billy Kilmer. Cuozzo was traded to the Minnesota Vikings early in 1968.

Baltimore selected Michigan State All-America defensive end BUBBA ( "I ALSO LIKE THEIR EASY OPENING CANS") SMITH with the first pick. Smith became a star for the Colts, starting at left end for their Super Bowl III and Super Bowl V teams.

Then With their SECOND FIRST ROUND PICK #26 selected LB Les Kelly from Alabama, played just 3 seasons in the NFL without ever starting.

Kevin Hardy -- 1968 (No. 7 overall)
You remember Kevin Hardy the Saint, right? Oh wait, no you don't, because the Saints' seventh-overall draft pick in 1968 never played a snap in a Saints uniform. Instead, he washed around to four different teams before eventually drifting off into NFL obscurity, only holding a place on lists such as this and in the nightmares of diehard Saints fans.

In 1973 they did it again with the Colts trading the #1 pick to them for Billy Newsome and pick #86 that resulted in the Saints selecting LB Jim Merlow. Baltimore said "Thanks Again" and used the pick to select BERT JONES Not satisfied they also traded pick#3 to Dallas for LB Tom Stincic,
played a whole 7 games and had 0's in all stats! Dallas said thank you very much and drafted " THE BEAUTIFUL" HARVEY MARTIN" Harvey who played in four Pro Bowls, was a part of the famed ‘Doomsday Defense’ and set team records with 114 career sacks including 20 in the 1977 season alone. He led the Cowboys in sacks several times..

1974 RICK MIDDLETON instead of the anchor of the "Orange CRUSH" All Pro RANDY GRADISHAR also a WR by the name of LYNN SWANN was available!!

Who could forget 1977 7th overall pick "JOE (I WON A SUPERBOWL WITHOUT MAKING A TACKLE) Campbell"

If they traded Sproles rather than let him walk to the Falcons, I'm good with that.
