Saints Sign Jimmy Graham to one year deal

Jimmy Graham, who recorded some of the finest seasons ever by a New Orleans Saints tight end, returned to the team on a one-year contract Tuesday.

Graham last played for the Saints in 2014, when he caught 85 passes for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Why? I mean Jimmy was awesome but does he have anything left in the tank? It’s been a long time….

Turner from the Panthers is aboard also.

He looks skinny in his recent pic.

Has he learned how to block?

Re: Saints Sign Jimmy Graham to one year deal

Maybe he wants to play one more year and retire a Saint (provided he even makes the team). He didn’t even play last year. Maybe he thinks he can do what Gronk did. I just doubt it. But I wish him luck and hope he makes an impact.

If we paid less than Michael Thomas, the contract will be a better value. They are two very similar talents at very similar stages in their respective careers. It will be interesting to see which is more productive, or if their production is identical. While well past his prime, Graham could prove an upgrade over Trautman, if not over a league average third string replacement player. Still, I would rather see us focusing on getting younger and healthier and giving opportunities to players whose upside is not mostly in ticket sales.

It used to be this time of the year we had way too many safeties. This year it's tight ends! This will be interesting to watch.

I kind of agree with you in that we need to develop our young players, but on the other hand, we didn't have a red zone threat last year and he may provide that. Between Thomas, Graham, and Williams we've upgraded the red zone threats. If Graham makes a couple of TD's then he's a viable third tight end.

I suspect it is two fold, see if he can help and a retirement thing. Probably more of the latter.

Johnson was our best RZ threat last year at TE. We’ve added Foster to help Hill and now add Graham? And I’m still pulling for Krull!

Jeeeez, time really flies. He's 36 years old, I remember when we drafted him.

I'm okay with this signing but how much does he really have left? Juwan Johnson showed signs of being a very promising player for us, hopefully they don't force Jimmy out there to try and prove a point.

I agree don’t force him dizz. But sometimes a wise old TE can stay in the league. Gonzales, Gronk, Gates all showed if you know how to get open you can play TE at a late stage in your career. Let’s hope Graham can too.

Give us one year! We got Foster and Johnson! Playbook change? Look at the RB’s we have! WR will be just as important as a RB, but you have to grind it sometimes!

At least my Graham jersey I bought at the end of the season which ultimately was his last at the Saints can get some use.

Great teams often sign aging veterans to short term contracts with a specific specialty role in mind. I suspect that role for Graham is a red zone specialist. Awesome signing if he has anything left in the tank!

Let’s not forget we also added the guy who ran for 17 TDs last season. Our Red Zone scoring has to go up (if we stay healthy).

Interesting take from Ross Jackson about how signing Graham may impact Taysom.

Ross know the Saints and breaks them down very well. He needs to cut his finger nails though.

I guess I'm seeing this as a sort of nostalgia signing. I'm not very confident he has much value, even as a Red Zone option. If he is, he hasn't shown it only averaging 4-5 TD's in 5 seasons in his previous stints with decent QB's (Wilson and Rodgers). I curious to see what he still has left in the tank, but I'm not holding out much hope.

Probably so, but even 4 TDs would have put him in second place on the team for TD receptions las year.

Understood. But JJ put up 7 TD's with Dalton under center. Not Wilson or Rodgers. Like I said, I want to see what's left in the tank. Just not getting my expectations up over the Prodigal Son coming back after 7+ years as a essentially being a journeyman TE. We'll see.

I just wonder why SP didn't bring him in with the Broncos. He's been on a tear with former Saints, even coaches.

Agreed. I don’t expect the Jimmy of Old.

He looks scrawny and even a little malnourished. I hope he can stand up to the rigors of a full season.

Scrawny and malnourished? Take a closer look at that picture above. That thigh looks like a tree truck and his bicep looks pretty well developed to me. Don't forget that he's 6'7"!

Not really a big deal. I’d focus more on Juwan or Foster.

He”ll be lucky to make the final 53.

2013 Jimmy was a long time ago. He’s been on the downside (stats/production) of his career ever since.

Let Graham be a mismatch in the redzone where his size will count. Otherwise, let Juwan and Foster eat. Derek Carr does love reliable TE's.
