Re: Observations from Saint's victory vs Chargers
I don't know how Kendre Miller is supposed to stay healthy or even make any yardage gains when the O line whiff blocks and he gets hit as he takes the hand-off.
Penning, touted for his run blocking ability, had one of the worst whiffs I've ever seen on a stretch run play. The Chargers managed to get an unblocked sack, when sending only 4 people because our left guard just turned the complete opposite way. I know some of these guys won't play, but many might because our O line is injury prone. Not a good look. Payton Turner with a good sack and force fumble, that Bressee picked up. I think Foskey is gonna find his way onto IR magically this year, he simply does not look like he can play at the NFL level. Maybe they redshirt him. Lalos outplayed him and pretty sure that guy was an UDFA. |

Re: Observations from Saint's victory vs Chargers
I find myself crossing my fingers and hoping for the best when Winston drops back.
He looks clumsy and shaken. Jaylon Smith. A BIG, if is coming. If Jaylon Smith plays consistently like he did last night, questions about our LB depth may be answered. Playing like he played, may I say the order of our LB depth could be reordered. Payton Turner continues to prove me correct. When he plays, his number gets called for all the right reasons. |

Re: Observations from Saints' victory vs Chargers
Jake Haener seems to be quickly closing the gap on Winston, I don't think he has passed him yet, but I believe he may by mid-season or sooner.
O-line, just a big ole mess, hopefully the starters perform and don't have injury issues this year. I would say at this point the Saints RB situation is good, unless injuries occur, I think they are set and likely out of the market for additional help at this point. Nothing more I can add about the penalties, we all know that needs to be quickly fixed or the Saints will start the season 0-3. |

Re: Observations from Saints' victory vs Chargers
All valid points with the penalties. Hopefully it's merely a result of playing bodies to see if they will be worthy of making the team.
The rookie WRs all made 3Qs expendable. Shaq Davis looks huge out there. AT Perry is the same. WR1 Olave WR2 MT WR3/4 Shaheed WR4/3 AT Perry WR5 Shaq Davis WR6 Maybe Trequan ? Lonnie Johnson may have beat out Roby at CB. Yiadom too. Howden makes the team. Pride is a special teamer for now. Foskey needs a lot of work. Missing all that time hurt him so far. How can you cut Lalos? Is he the next Rob Ninkovich? Cage is a PS guy. Same for Emili and Heflin. And Filiaga at G. No need to bring more help at LB. Something will shake out from our bunch. We're not done figuring out our OL depth. We're good at RB too. Not sold on Williams yet. Krull is getting his chances but not coming through. We didn't see much of the other TEs for some reason. QBs are set... and this is indeed Jameis' last year here. Unless we find a trade partner that's willing to take on the cap hit sometime this year. Lots of fringe players that will be special teamers, like Kirklin out of LSU. One more week of evals. | |

If we keep six then Davis may round it out.

NFL targeting rules by the book There isn’t officially a “targeting” rule in the NFL rulebook. Rather, they have a lowering the helmet rule. For the 2022 season, that rule was clarified in the name of player safety to say, “It is a foul if a player lowers his head and makes forcible contact with his helmet against an opponent.” The addition of the “forcible” to the rule from previous years puts it much more in the line of targeting as we know it. Is a player ejected for targeting in the NFL? There is no mandatory ejection for this type of penalty in the NFL. Punishment is typically handed out after a review of the play/penalty by the league following the game and it is more likely that a fine will be handed out rather than a suspension, though that is possible. Depending on the play, a player can be ejected, though. It is up to the discretion of the officials. NFL targeting rules vs. college football The biggest difference between the NFL and college football when it comes to proverbial targeting rules (other than the terminology, as mentioned) is the ejection. While ejections are up for discretion in the NFL, that is not the case if, after review, a player is deemed to have committed a targeting foul. If that happens, the player is ejected and suspended for the next half (if it occurs in the first half of a game, he will only miss the second half). |
