Blake Grupe - NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

A nice recognition for the rookie.

I was a little worried when we got rid of Lutz but so far it seems like the right move.

Scared me a bit when he missed the game winner against GB, but he's been straight money since!

Now we need to find another gem like him at punter.

And Offensive Coordinator.

I’m not knocking the guy, but it must’ve been a pretty weak week for special teams across the league if Grupe won the honor. I’m glad he made his kicks but going 2-2 on FGs is nothing to write home about. Just my take.

I think it had to do with being 6-6 on all kicks and with both FG's being over 50 yards. It also appears that five of seven kickoffs were touchbacks and on the other two the returns were held short of the 25 yard line.

Pretty decent numbers there across the board, but not the best in the league. Greg Zuerlein won the AFC award going 5-5 on FG's, 2-2 on XP's, and had touchbacks on all eight of his kickoffs.

Yeah, it was a good day for him. Just surprised it won him the award.

Chicagos kicker Cairo Santos (great name) was 8 for 8 with 4 FGs. His longest was only 43 though.

Yeah. They seem give more weight to those long ones. PK's seem to get it more than other positions, but I've seen returners and punters quite a bit, too. Pretty sure coverage players have won it a few time, as well.

Here's a listing on Pro-football reference of every player of the week back into the late '70's!

Morstead was listed several times.

Well, that’s interesting. PFR lists Matt Gay as the AFC special teams winner, not Zuerlein. Zuerlein had a much better kicking day than Gay did. And Gay had no kicks over 50 yards. How the hell does that work out? Edit. I was looking at week 3.
