The Saints are going to profit the same basically regardless of whether any of their gear is sold or not. Merchandise sales are shared equally among ALL 32 teams.

NFL Economics: How Do NFL Teams Make Money?

"The league negotiates national merchandise, licensing, and TV contracts, which make up most of the national revenue. The 32 teams receive equal shares of this money, regardless of individual team performance. The teams generate local income through concession sales, ticket sales, and corporate sponsors."

A percentage of the locally generated revenue is also shared amongst the whole league, as well. This model guarantees the fiscal viability of all teams regardless of performance.

Re: Why Your Team Sucks 2023: New Orleans Saints

Best football quote of the week :

The top offenses in the NFL

ALL OF THEM have plenty of
1) Pre & at the snap motion
2) Personnel & formation flexibility
3) Heavy use of play-action

Yet teams think they can run offenses that don't have these elements
and be successful? That's on coaching 100%.

Dan Orlovsky

FYI, the Saints are dead last in play action %, dead last in play action pass yards % and 31st in percentage of plays in motion before/at the snap.

And Pete Carmichael is on Airline Dr., still gainfully employed as Saints OC.

I drafted Jayden Daniels on Madden. That’s going well. 🤷🏽*♂️🥲

Re: Why Your Team Sucks 2023: New Orleans Saints

Most of our offensive line have no true position and have played 4 different positions in their last 17 games, so thats our positional flexibility. Other teams line up Deebo Samual or Tyreek Hill at halfback, we line up James Hurst or Trevor Penning at Left Tackle or Right Guard. So we do have positional flexibility. Its just like flexibility of where to hide slow clumsy people not where to feature fast agile people. Other offenses are vertical in a downfield sense, our offense is often vertical in terms of Penning falling straight down giving a pass rusher a straight shot at Carr who goes straight down and comes up holding his throwing shoulder. Our offense keeps defenses on their toes because on any given 3rd down and long play we would have 1 eligible receiver go out wide and 4 block, or 3 receivers go out wide to the same spot on the field and 2 block. We have that dynamic flexibility where all our receivers can run the same route, even on the same play. We also have a punter who is better at Rugby, beer pong, and jailhouse tattoo art than punting and 4 starting defensive lineman who could play DT.

Although merchandise revenue may be split, I think it still sends a message to the teams owner when their teams merchandise doesn't sell. Most want to be seen as leaders pulling more than their own weight. It also gives them more power in league circles to be seen as pulling more than their own weight. We can't force DA to be fired but every stat counts, even if the money is split 32 ways the finger only points one way when the owners meet and one team is last in merchandise sales.

Well, I hope your discontinuing of mega purchases of Saints merchandise tips the needle. I seriously doubt it, however. Once again, those that are so gung-ho about boycotting anything are those that really never used what they are demanding being boycotted. LOL!

By the way, here's an interesting article which breaks down the annual fan spending on concessions, alcohol, and merchandise for every NFL team.

This must be based on 2022 or earlier since it came out before the 2023 season started. I think its funny that Bucs fans were spending the most on merchandise (to get Brady jerseys) while Pats fans were spending the least on merchandise (because they already had Brady jerseys). This may not bode well for our rankings once fans figure out Derek Carr is probably not elite and perhaps nobody we have can live up to the nostalgia of the Brees jersey they already own. But we do have better offensive weapons than New England, so maybe people will buy some Shaheed or Olave jerseys.

Re: Why Your Team Sucks 2023: New Orleans Saints

While Harbaugh is now and will be the more obvious name going around in coaching circles, I was just thinking we do something a little less obvious which could be a good move ... take our indirect partnership with Ohio State to the next level and hire Ryan Day to replace DA this offseason. Coaching the Buckeyes is pretty close to the NFL and he's had some time now to prove himself. He's got a solid offensive mind and Stroud's success this year has raised his stock with me. Get to it Mickey!

Or maybe if he donates double the price of season tickets and merchandise, they’ll invest his money more productively, and do some more upgrades to the Dome, to enhance his masochistic experience through our next season of mediocrity.
