We knew Cam Jordan was getting older and would likely decline but the second he waxed nostalgic and talked about wanting to retire a Saint, we jumped the gun and gave him a big extension with guaranteed money for multiple years and acting like it was amazing bargain because he cost less than Nick Bosa. It was very obvious that at this age, Cam Jordan's value could only maintain or go down, there was no chance he was going to do something so amazing this year at this age on this team that it would create a $25 million a year bidding war for his services. Yet, we insisted on extending him with guaranteed money a year before his contract expired without getting any sample size on what his 2023 production looked like and whether we were already at the point of decline. I am not saying I don't want him to retire a Saint, but now he is needlessly going to get paid on his 2022 numbers through 2025 when his production has already declined in 2023 and we already had him under contract for 2023 without the extension. And we should also have considered that if we play poorly this year, he might be better off with a contender and we may be better off with youth, yet we took that option off the table early.
Similar thing with Granderson. We promote him to a full time starter, he plays 2 games of good ball against weak opponents, and we jump to to sign him to a giant extension and brag about what a bargain it is. Could his price have gone up a little if we at least waited until week 8? Perhaps. But in reality he cooled down and we overpaid. The scenario where he become Nick Bosa and we got a bargain by striking only 2 games in to his full time starter gig instead of waiting for like 8 games was very unlikely. Any raise he would have got for sustaining production 8 weeks would likely have been small, as he still probably would have preferred certainty of a long term deal over injury risk in the last 9 games. And had he become Bosa on this contract, our bargain would likely have only lasted a year before he held out or something. Scheming to underpay a player hoping 2 weeks make a star is just a lose-lose game. We should have waited for at least 8 weeks of full time starting production. By giving Jordan and Granderson needless new deals way early, we also took motivation away from the rest of the pass rush. What incentive does Foskey and Turner have to rush back and be great quick? There is still upside for them, but a lot less than if they could actually get a starting job on this team if they worked hard. New premature deals for both the incumbents mean all the starting gigs are locked up regardless of merit. They should still work hard hoping they can flash in limited time or in case of injuries and eventually work to get contracts with another team, but its sure a lot less of an immediate attractive reward than if they could compete to start, which now they can't because it would make Loomis's contracts to Jordan and Granderson look bad. The same goes to JPP. Maybe he hangs up on the Dolphins if he thinks he can stay here and earn a big contract for 2024. But that can't happen with Jordan and Granderson both on new deals. |
