Falcons have to adjust to injuries on defense
Associated Press National Football League News Wire FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons linebacker Ed Hartwell had surgery Monday to repair a torn right Achilles' tendon and will miss the rest of the season. Coach Jim Mora said the Falcons also expect to lose backup cornerback Chris Cash for the season with a broken arm. Hartwell and Cash were injured in Atlanta's 31-28 loss Sunday to New England. Cash filled a key role in the secondary when he was signed after a season-ending injury to Kevin Mathis. But the loss of Hartwell could cause the most dramatic adjustments to the defense. "We'll recover as a football team and Ed will recover, but we will miss his presence," Mora said. Hartwell, the team's most significant free-agent acquisition of the offseason, was expected to lead the defense as a run-stopping middle linebacker. He was viewed by Mora and general manager Rich McKay as the missing piece from last year's team, which lost in the NFC championship game. I'm not too sure, but wasn't Hartwell injury prone prior to signing with Atlanta? I remember some guys thinking we should make a run at him. I could be wrong.

What some Falcons fans are sayin' ....
"Chickens ain't hatched yet, no use countin' em... Saints are so schizoid they may score 50 pts of us... you just cant tell, and we aint impressing many on defense.." " Gotta agree. Don't care what the record New Orleans is NEVER a gimmie game." "Hopefully Joe Horn sits out as well cause he will destroy our pathethic secondary." "With Stecker's situation up in the air and Antowain Smith washed up, I wonder what they are going to do at RB for the rest of this year." "Why did our secondary stink yesterday (vs. Pats)? Simply put, they're not built to cover for long periods of time, and our pass rush was non-existent yesterday. Our scheme is supposed to protect against big plays, but it counts on pass rush. If this game were outside yesterday, Brady wouldn't have even gotten dirty. One sack is all we got against a line with two rookies starting." There ya go... 8) |

I watched that game here in Atlanta dude. It was two good teams going at each other. Also Vick did not play. Be afraid...be very afraid. They're talking about their secondary...man that was Tom "frickin" Brady QBing against them. Don't believe the hype. Those dingy birds have a decent team, much as I hate to admit it. The Saints that showed up in Green Bay better not be in S.A. next Sunday. We need them boys that played against Carolina in week 1 or the sh*ts gone get deeper.

A few more comments from Falcons fans....
"Not that i'm a Vick hater, but he only has confidence in a couple WR's (Crump, Finneran). We need some new blood on the squad and if i remember correctly, Pathon burned us a couple times when he first came up with the Saints. I'd like to see what he can do." " The Patriots was on the mark and played their game against the Falcons with super bowl percision, but found themselves fighting a full, four quaters and just excaping the Falcons with a three point win. This brought fourth the realization to rest of the league, that Atlanta will indeed be a force to reckon with in the NFC this year." "Now we get to cruise for a few weeks against some inferior (or ailing) teams in NO, NYJ, Miami, and GB. With 7-2 being a very attainable goal going into the Bucs game under the Dome, let the pundits say what they will now, but when that game rolls around, we'll once again be the talk of the league..." "The Saints give up even more than we do on the ground this year, and that is probably the biggest stat against them, along with the TO ratio, where NO is the only team in double digits on the minus side... With the Deuce out of this one, I expect the Falcons will come out and shove this ball down their throats ala Minnesota, and just like in the Vikings game, I think you'll see us blitz everybody in a familiar jersey to force turnovers. Time to make a new statement, one to our division opponents. New Orleans, unfortunately for them, is going to be first in line..." "Hmmm... This is odd. Check out the poll question on the Saints site...One of the choices for best Saints win over us in the last five years is 26-13 in 2005. What is even stranger is that some of the fans voted for that option..." "I'm just saying man....we all know who the STARTER is and we all know the BACKUP is so why is this still being debated." "Damn, Shut up. Quit whining, you sound like a Bucs fan." There ya go... 8) |

From Times-Picayune...
Last meeting The Saints won 26-13 on Dec. 26, 2004, at the Superdome. Schaub played for the injured Vick, completing 17 of 41 passes for 188 yards. He threw two interceptions and was sacked for a safety. Michael Lewis sealed the Saints' victory with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Falcons on Offense Schaub, a third-round pick from Virginia in '04, is a solid backup when given the opportunity, but Vick provides an extra dimension to their offense when he decides to leave the pocket. Vick becomes an elusive running back capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. He carries a 83.0 passer rating into Sunday's game, completing 44 of 77 passes for 495 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 32 carries for 233 yards and one touchdown. . . . Tight end Alge Crumpler (19 catches for 257 yards and two touchdowns) has given the Saints fits the past several seasons, especially on seam routes. Other targets include wide receivers Brian Finneran (19-238-1), Michael Jenkins (12-217-1) and Dez White (2-25-1). . . . Baton Rouge native Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett complement each other in the running game. The thunder (Duckett) and lightning (Dunn) tandem has combined on 132 carries for 655 yards and five touchdowns. Falcons on Defense Atlanta is faced with replacing starting middle linebacker Ed Hartwell for the remainder of the season. Hartwell, the team's most significant off-season acquisition, tore his right Achilles tendon against the Patriots. Potential replacements include starting weakside linebacker Keith Brooking and versatile linebacker/special teams ace Ike Reese. Backup cornerback Chris Cash also is lost for the season with a broken arm. . . . The Falcons' strength lies with the defensive line. Rod Coleman, Chad Lavalais, a standout at LSU, and Antwan Lake comprise a three-man rotation at tackle. Ends Patrick Kerney and former Saints draft pick Brady Smith provide the up-field push off the edge. . . . Cornerback Deangelo Hall leads the team with three interceptions. Falcons' Special Teams Free agent rookie Michael Koenen has emerged as a versatile kicking specialist. He made veteran punter Toby Gowin expendable and handles the punting and kickoff duties. Against the Patriots, Koenen kicked a 58-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, the second longest field goal in franchise history. Morten Andersen holds the club record with a 59-yarder against the San Francisco 49ers in 1995. . . . Todd Peterson has converted all six field-goal attempts inside the 50. Koenen is averaging 42.7 yards per punt. . . . Return specialist Allen Rossum has been held in check. He is averaging 3.7 yards per punt return and 23.1 yards per kick return. BY THE NUMBERS: 5 -- Games in which Vick has eclipsed 100 yards rushing, most by a quarterback in NFL history. That includes a postseason game against the St. Louis Rams on Jan. 15, 2005, when he set a league record for a quarterback with 119 yards. WORTH REPEATING: "This train has left the station and there is no turning back." -- Falcons owner Arthur Blank on his personal crusade to bring a Super Bowl championship to the city of Atlanta. http://www.nola.com/saints/t-p/index...8038273280.xml 8) |
