Re: Klint Kubiak could be the Saints new OC
I don't think we have a need at backup QB. I expect Winston to move on given the conflict with the head coach but if he stays for cheap thats fine too, I think he is a motivator in the locker room who adds value off the field.
But if Winston goes I think we are fine with Haener. Realistically Haener is probably not Brock Purdy, and its a big fallacy to label him as such, because many late round picks have similar tangible attributes as each other, but few succeed. Brock Purdy is a lottery ticket that won, Jake Haener is a lottery ticket that hasn't been scratched off. If your neighbor won the lottery, your ticket from the same convenience store with the logos probably did not win. The logic that says because Brock Purdy has been successful, and Jake Haener was drafted a couple rounds earlier the next year he is the next Brock Purdy, would also have dictated that Chris Weinke, Sage Rosenfels, and Jesse Palmer would all be the next Tom Brady. Ironically, at 2-18 Chris Weinke is arguably the WOAT at QB. None the less we have to play Haener at some point to find out what he is. And if he sucks, the consolation prize is a higher draft pick. We are not the 85 Bears defense who just needs an ok QB to win it all, we are not going to win a Super Bowl if we bring in Joe Flacco to invest in a quality backup. We probably are not going to win much with Carr, so lottery tickets are a great backup option for us not steady veteran backups. If the lottery ticket pays off we solve our QB problem. If they dont, the draft solves it the next year. If we want competition at backup QB our best option would be to draft another lottery ticket in the mid to late rounds. |

Secondly, I don't believe that Carr is anywhere near as incompetent as you imply. I fully believe we can win with him and win at a high level with the right person designing and calling plays. Carmichael had regressed to the level where he would make Tom Brady look bad. I do, however, agree with you on pretty much everything you said about Haener. |

I really do believe that Kubiak will put Derek Carr in a position to succeed by having him prepared and giving him easy reads on a three step drop and a strong running game. It already sounds old but I believe it's true. In fact, I believe he could do wonders with Jake Haener too. That young man has all the tools and Kubiak will push both QB's to be their best. I'm cautiously optimistic again! |

Re: Klint Kubiak could be the Saints new OC
Heard Underhill touch on this earlier this week but Niners/Kubiak & co used play action 133 times in 2023. The Saints ... 98 times .
To dumb this down a bit ... Brock Purdy (Mr. Irrelevant) led the league in passer rating on play action attempts. Carr is who he is, but I expect Kubiak to get a little bit more out of him. Especially with targets (Olave, Shaheed, AK) he has on offense. Gotta tighten up that o line though. We'll see. |
