Any Hope For the 2005 Saints, Will Haslett Survive?
Is there any hope for the 2005 Saints; will Jim Haslett survive?
CBSsportsline.com Pete Prisco The feeling around the league is that the Saints are done, that what they've been through is too much for this team. The loss of running back Deuce McAllister for the season sure doesn't help, either. But while the Saints are fighting a tough mental battle, if they beat the Falcons on Sunday at the Alamodome, they're right in the thick of the division race. They have two games left against Tampa Bay, two against Atlanta and one against Carolina. Their fate is in their own hands. But it won't be easy. The Saints were terrible last week in Green Bay and Aaron Brooks was even worse. At some point, he has to play better. The Saints aren't dead yet, though. As for Haslett, he won't get fired. There are too many extenuating circumstances for that to be a reality. Winning with what this team has faced would be a challenge to any coach. He's handled it all with class, never using it as an excuse. The players respect him for that. The owner likes him. He gets a pass if he wants it. Clark Judge No and yes. The Saints don't have a chance because of the upheaval that disrupted their practices, their games and their lives. Haslett insisted he would try to keep players focused, but how do you do that when you're not living at home and you work in an unfamiliar environment? Most teams can count on homefield advantages, but how can you have an advantage when you don't have a home? San Antonio? Baton Rouge? The Meadowlands? Where, exactly, is home? I'll tell you: Fourth place in the NFC South. That's where the Saints will settle, and the circumstances that forced the club to leave New Orleans will buy Haslett time. Normally, he would be a candidate to be fired, but there is nothing normal about what happened to him and his team. Haslett will be given a pass, and he should be. http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8956752 8) |
