Much of that will hit as dead cap in 2025 but big hits from the two designated post-june-1 cuts, i would propose Carr and Ram, will hit in 2026. But then again our 2026 cap situation will look no worse, it will just be dead cap hits for Carr and Ram instead of their massive salaries, so it will be a minor issue. Then in 2027 we could have a fairly clean cap.

We could contend in 2025 and 2026 with the right draft picks and maybe a few value free agents. But sometimes a team that is almost all the way there needs big cap money to bring in the next Tom Brady, Jalen Ramsey, or Trent Williams to become the top dog. We certainly wont have the money to do that until 2026 or later, ideally 2027 or later.

I think the smart more is to cut the dead weight and aging injured players, try to build a young core, cleanup our cap, and try to find a young QB who clearly has what it takes. Then when that QB is in his window to win and we clearly need a little more boost, then spend the money to get a big free agent and take a shot. Don't spend the big money just to try to get the wildcard, get the wildcard through the draft, hopefully the division through the draft, and then spend for the ring.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orle...sort/cap_total

Time is now. A couple of years of hurt, after which we get a new look. How many of those on the 2025 cap can we offload to another team, I wonder?

Out of the top 16, only a handful need we keep next year, McCoy, Ruiz, Olave, Granderson, Sheppard and maybe Johnson (although even at his salary a case can be made he's not worth it).

Actually, looking at the entire list, you can make an argument on getting rid well over half that roster. We're still paying MT and Crab Legs for one more year.

Re: So... who you got as next Saints HC ?

This won't be a easy fix.

1 - need to start hitting home runs in the draft
2 - get that cap in order
3 - over paying OLDER players needs to stop
4 - cutting AK saves roughly 17M. Ramz 6M, Cam J 3M etc.
5 - continue to rebuild in those trenches on BOTH sides.

Just about everyone needs to be a candidate for a possible trade.

That's a tall task for any new Head coach to over come. I'd start looking at someone from Dan Campbell's coaching (Johnson, Glenn).

Saints need a real plan, not a quick fix.

With free-agency, the draft and undrafted free-agents, a team can be rebuilt in one season.

From my view shoring up the trenches solves 80% of our problems roster wise. Thats the roux we need for that excellent pot of gumbo. Throw in some spicy free-agents and a skill stud or two and we're back on top, roster wise.

Ryans in Houston did it in short order

So did Dan in Detroit

Quit drafting these fringe school project players and get more proven SEC players!

The one that haunts me is the 2nd round Foskey pick. Could've had safety Brian Branch. I was watching the DET@MIN game yesterday and he's outstanding. Reminds me a little of our Sammy Knight from back in the day.

Facts.

The most “pro ready” conference in college football.

Remember how crushed Brian was when he didn’t get the 1st round call in that draft? Instead of pouting & heading back home, all he did was come back on Day 2, wait for his name to be called, shake hands & tell the world he is grateful for the opportunity.

Says a LOT about his character. And you’re right, he’s a baller for Detroit.

Now that this thread is more relevant, who's stepping up to be a candidate to be HC? There's only 32 teams... will someone of quality want to come here with our crazy cap situation?

That's after years of cellar dwelling. We're going to have to get there for a couple of years to clear this cap situation.

If we bring in Saleh he likely brings a 3-4/zone heavy scheme. It’s the complete opposite of the way this roster is built. Saleh likes a Cover 4, bend but don’t break, come up and tackle style of defense. No big plays. I like the philosophy, we just have a lot of work to do finding players with that archetype.

Flores has coached under Bellichek and tomlin and is a no nonsense guy. I get the offensive guys are the more sexy hires but let’s get this defense back to what it once was and make coming into the dome scary again.

The next Saints HC? ..

Someone who will hold players accountable.
Someone the players will respect.
A badass, hard nose coach.

The Dan Campbell, Mike Tomlin types.

Glad you're here Rez. Posts like this are exactly why.

Maybe Joe Woods keeps his job?

I'd like Vrabel. I think he's similar to Campbell in Detroit. I said it in another thread but I'd love to see Vilma on the Saints sideline as a D-coordinator but I'm sure that his color commentary gig pays well with much less stress.

That would be consistent with the way Loomis likes to operate. I think I’d find me something new. Just start over fresh.

Re: So... who you got as next Saints HC ?

I want to see more consideration for college coaches ... Matt Campbell from Iowa State is probably ready to upgrade his job. Ironically his team also lost this weekend 23-22. Difference is, the Cyclones were 7-0 going into it. If Ryan Day loses to Michigan and they bring out the pitchforks there, he could also be in play.

It's time to look outside the organization.

Does it really matter having a complete revamp. Is there more than a handful that couldn't adapt you see here in 2 years?

He's been pretty much irrelevant for a long long time. The games changed

I’m okay with it. It’s just that we won’t really have the cap for the complete overhaul we would likely be undergoing. And we’d have to fill up the LB room because there’s a 4 on the field instead of the two we’ve been running. Need some 3-4 style EDGE rushers. Just a lot to figure out.

I wouldn’t be mad at it. I’m not trying to start anything, but based on the personalities of the guys we have in the locker room they’d respond well to an African American head coach. Saints have never had one. Would be a pretty monumental move for the franchise. Ben Johnson is my preference right now, but I definitely wouldn’t mind Flores or even Aaron Glenn.

Johnson
Monken
Flores
Glenn

I’ll take any of them.

Do you think that is even an issue for the players? Isn't it more about the personality of the HC?

I really think rez is right. I think the players have more respect for those coaches given their path to where they are was much more difficult to navigate than many of their counterparts.

Question "Who would be the best head coach to coach the New Orleans Saints"?
  • Ben Johnson (Colts OC)

  • Brian Flores (Vikings DC)
  • Shane Steichen (Colts HC)

To this day, I can't believe Loomis interviewed Eric Bieniemy for 8 straight hours and then said "we'll go with Dennis Allen"

What an absolute moron

Bieniemy's red flags are still causing him problems. He has that laundry list of assault cases, including choking a woman, harassment, DUI, giving false information, and "interfering with fire personnel”. There's also the being "linked to allegations that Colorado's football program “used alcohol and sex to lure recruits.” And finally, and maybe more importantly, the complaints from players that he didn't "relate well".

There's at least a few things in there than I can see causing Gayle to throw out the veto.

That's fair as I did not know all of that

Sounds like a piece of **** dude in that case.

I am excited to see who we get, I just hope Loomis doesn't try to turn us into Sean Paytons Saints all over again. Ship has sailed, we need to move on.
