The Saints dropped their 8th game of the season and are now 4-8 overall. The Rams went into halftime scoreless and came out in the 2nd half like they received the Saints defensive handbook in some shady Gatorade exchange behind the lavatory.

Re: Observations from Saints Rams Game
Common theme from each loss is getting destroyed in the trenches.
D Line is soft. O line is so injured they can't string a good series of plays together. Rams were averaging 9 yards per rush at one point. I'd have hoped a bit of Rizzi magic could have got the players to match the competition level, but alas it was not to be. We just don't have very good players or coaches. It needs starting from scratch. |

Re: Observations from Saints Rams Game
I've been a Carr apologist since his arrival but he's not going to work out in New Orleans. I know that the interior of the o-line is bad but Carr isn't dependable. Throwing off his back foot, throwing low, throwing behind his receivers, leading his receivers into tragic collisions...
Loomis needs to step down. From his awful support for Dennis Allen to his press conferences belittling the fans he's got to go. I am now officially a "Lose out" guy. This team needs a lot of help. |

Don’t believe it will happen, but we need a purge top down starting with Loomis.

Re: Observations from Saints Rams Game
Taysom Hill being injured was extremely predictable. I have been saying it all year. He is 34 years old. He plays like a human battering ram. He was injured every year in college, and only limited use has kept him healthy on and off as a pro. I understand he is a fan favorite, but he is possibly the worst player ever to try to build a sustainable offense around, unless we include other sports and Zion. He is basically the 34yo Zion of football. We will never be a serious contender as long as our fan base wants to build our offense around a 34yo medical frankenstein making rugby plays because the highlight reels make us want to pound our chests and drink a fosters lager.
There is a very real chance that Kamara is the next to go down. With Olave, Shaheed, and Hill all out, we are going to try to route 50% of our offense through a 29yo finesse RB in his 8th NFL season. Kamara is not built like Derrick Henry. We are setting ourselves up for bigger losses by doubling down on these older players. CMC going down shows the risks. Everyone is all hot on spending on RB this year because of the results with a few other free agents, but most are younger than Kamara, Henry is built different, and they are ignoring the biggest check of all to CMC. Ignore the fads, look at the long term data, 30-ish RB's are a very risky investment and if you have one, you better win now. Rizzi is certainly a better leader than Allen. But in losses like this you see that we should not get too excited. You also have to look at Antonio Pierce, who was the miracle interim coach last year for the Raiders, but is worst in the NFL last year. And you have to look at how Haslett's best year in New Orleans was his first year. Sometimes when a head coach with clear strengths and weaknesses is replaced with a different coach with different clear strengths and weaknesses, you get the best of both worlds for a limited time only. DA and Josh McDaniels both had their strengths in certain areas of x's and o's and preperation, but were set in their ways, lacking leadership and motivation, and lost the locker rooms. Both were replaced with more motivating energetic personalities in interim coaches Rizzi and Pierce, and players responded to this breath of fresh of air by taking all the lessons DA and McDaniels had taught them and executing them with their new coaches passion, and for awhile it looked good. In the short run the best of both coaching styles could combine and get some wins, but in the long run the new coaches flaws may emerge, and perhaps Pierce and Rizzi are not as good as their replacements at the preparation and strategy, and as the lessons of their predeccessor fade, their rah rah personalities will only go so far. And eventually merely being 'not DA' or 'not McDaniels' may only buy them 110% from the locker room for a short time. Likewise I think going from Ditka to Haslett, Ditka was so old fashion, but instilled in the players a fear, hunger, and toughness. When Haslett combined those existing traits with somewhat more modern game plans and a more approachable personality the players embraced it. But over time the toughness Ditka has instilled failed, and Ditka's culture of no excuses was replaced with Haslett's culture of an excuse for everything. To be successful in the long run, a head coach needs to bring everything his team needs to win, not rely on the memories of what his predecessor instilled. When the predecessor completely lost the locker room, that is particularly important. So I don't know if I would trust Rizzi's results too much from the first two games, or even the rest of the year if he turns this around. If he turns it around and we keep Rizzi, we still have to realize we could get Antonio Pierce 2.0 next year. I think it is possible that Loomis could be sidelined out of his GM role. Gayle has not technically adopted him. She clearly overruled and defied him on firing DA, and their disagreement was aired in public when Loomis spoke to the press about how DA was still a great coach and its all unfortunate. If Gayle is willing to overrule Loomis on the head coaching position, and Loomis is willing to go to the press and imply it was a mistake, then I have a really hard time believing their relationship is so 100% rock solid that there is not even a possibility Gayle could sideline Loomis. Sorry but Bresee could have a sack every game and still be a liability. Most of his sacks are garbage. He is a grown up version of Bobby from King of the Hill out there lining up next to a bunch of real football players. When one of our other dline who is actually athletic, explosive, or has technique, at least at a college level, is causing trouble, the opposing offense shifts over and ignores Bobby. When the pocket breaks down and the opposing QB has a dline in every direction, and many of them looks ready to deliver a punishing hit, he runs toward Bobby. So every game or two, there is a play where Bobby gets a free run at the QB or the QB runs straight for Bobby, Bobby hugs the QB, and Bobby gets a sack. There has always been the CB you throw at, so they get more tackles and some occasional picks. Bobby Bresee is the DT you single cover, don't cover, who your QB runs toward when taking the sack is the best remaining option. He could lead the NFL in sacks and he would be a liability. He only leads DT in sacks because he is the DT that oline is least afraid to leave unblocked the the QB is least afraid to be hit by. His sacks are -2 yards and a hug. If some team would just look at the stats and not the analytics and tape, and would give us a 1st round pick for Bresee to be able to sell their fans that they acquired this amazing pass rushing DE, we should consider trading Bresee in the offseason. I would even take an early 2nd rounder. The Rams were averaging 9 yards a run because Bresee played that entire game for 1 sack. Caitlan Clark in the NBA would be less one dimensional than Bryan Bresee in the NFL. MVS has been a good contributor. If he doesnt catch the dropsies again we could resign him or get a comp pick if he leaves. I heard the Fail Clowns may trade Cousins. Who on earth would want him? Sadly even Carr is better. If there is a market for Cousins, we should offer Carr to all the same teams, to drive the price down if nothing else. |
