Interesting Stats - for stat lovers

An interesting tidbit from the article:

"He's(Fred Thomas) part of the reason the Saints are 12th in the league in total defense (301.7 yards per game) and fifth in pass defense (172.7 ypg). A year ago, the Saints finished with one of the league's worst pass defenses — 27th of 32 teams (243 ypg)."

My own eyes tell me our defense is not stellar, but I also did not think they played as bad as last year. For once, the stats seem to bear that out.

That being the case, why are we so far behind so early on in our losses? My answer is offensive turnovers. Granted we had two horrific special teams turnovers, but that does not come even CLOSE to accounting for all our turnovers. They happened on offense and most happened at the hands of our QB.
