Not unless a miracle happens. His dead cap hit is 51 million next year.

It would not take a miracle. It would take the willingness to have a very bad season in 2025. Carr could be designate a post-June-1 cut at the start of the league year. That would defer $30mil of the $51mil dead cap hit to 2026 salary cap. Then we could restructure most our other players and make zero additions in free agency of anything more than veteran minimum level. We might go 0-17 or 0-18 in 2025 but our cap situation would be much better in 2026. But Loomis may not be willing to do it.

If we restructure Carr instead, it will make his dead cap in 2026 offseason similar, and we will just face the same decision year after year. Meanwhile Carr is a decent QB who has never won a playoff game, who is like the 40yo Virgin of the NFL playoffs, and we are hoping to sneak into the playoffs with the 40yo Virgin and then have him run the table. Just not a very realistic plan. Better to pick the worst option at QB now for cheap and get a great option later instead of settling for mediocrity forever.

For the sake of cleaning up the cap, we can endure a crappy season or two. Houston did it.

Houston!

.
We have a problem

Getting the cap under control would certainly test the mettle of the support. Times have changed since bags on head. Everyone's expectation of their satisfaction level will not tolerate that now.

Just don't extend players who don't have value. We keep extending contracts on players who are past their prime. I am willing to watch a couple years of bad football so we can get back on track and get to playing good football again. Let's get this cap under control and draft well so we can get younger and cheaper.
