Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
1 Attachment(s)
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero made an appearance Tuesday on "Good Morning Football" and dropped a couple of hints as to whom the Saints might pursue to replace Dennis Allen.
"Pelissero mentioned New Orleans as one of many teams "doing homework" on veteran coach Mike Vrabel, whom the Tennessee Titans fired after last season despite a largely successful six-year tenure. Vrabel was 54-45 and led the Titans to the playoffs three times." Jon Gruden was also mentioned as an option for several teams with head coaching openings. "I would not be surprised at all if in the coming weeks, you see Jon Gruden's name popping up interviewing for a head coaching job." LINK |

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
There is precedent for head coaches doing great in their second gigs who made the playoffs but didnt win it all in their first gig. There is not a precedent for coaches winning it all in their third or fourth gig, or winning it all with two teams. Also Gruden would be a bad move because it would be like spitting in Goodell's face and he would sick the refs back on us.

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
TBH, I am not sure there is a better option than Vrabel at the moment. He's a BB disciple too.
Gruden would be tempted to keep Carr. And we can't have that. And his baggage with RG, while unfair, could have negative consequences for the team. We may all be secretly hoping Gruden wins his lawsuit. Brian Flores seems to be an intriguing option, but he did have his shot in Miami already. Maybe he'd be my number 2. Maybe he should be the number 1 option. He was the architect of the delicious FailClowns 28-3 meltdown. Then again, he sued the NFL for the SP/Brady to Miami debacle. Maybe that's why he got fired from Miami if the owner did not approve of the blowup. Maybe that's a better reason to keep him on our short list. He's Hispanic too. Aaron Glenn will likely wind up in NY with the J E T S. Not sure the assistant offensive coach names bantered about are ready to be a HC just yet. The Tomlin's of the world are a rare breed, unproven never-been-a-HC stepping up to fulfill the responsibilities of the office of HC properly. We'll see what unfolds... |

Anyway, no to Gruden. He's been out of the game too long. Flores and Vrabel are interesting options if you want someone with head coach experience. Glenn isn't a bad option either. I just want them to go through the process and not just hire the first guy they like. I know the team is in bad shape cap wise, so that may give a couple of the candidates second thoughts. But it's an NFL head coaching job. Someone will take it. It just may not be our first choice. |

But you still have Mickey Loomis as GM🤦.
This franchise is in trouble. |

I'm not in favor of bringing in a college coach as a head coach. It's just too big of a transition from most coaches to the nfl. I would rather have an offensive minded coach so that we didn't lose our OC every couple of years. Still, Vrabel or Glenn would probably work here.

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
Vrabel's TN HC record:
2018 9-7 2019 9-7 (Playoffs 2-1. Lost to KC in AFC Championship Game.) 2020 11-5 (Playoffs 0-1. Lost to BAL in AFC Wild Card Game.) 2021 12-5 (Playoffs 0-1. Lost to CIN in AFC Divisional Playoff Game) 2020 7-12 2021 6-11 He was a pretty good Defensive mind, but his Offenses were far from scary. Keep in mind that his current position is Coaching and Personnel consultant with the Browns! So, with the Saints' Front Office at least as dysfunctional as the Titans', is this the guy to reset the team? Do we need an Offensive mind or continue sign another Defensive minded HC. Or do we go off the menu and try a fresh set of eyes. IE. Ben Johnson, Brian Flores, Joe Brady, Kellen Moore, or my favorite Aaron Glenn. And does it even really matter with the same front office jacking up the cap and missing on pre-draft talent evaluations? Thoughts. |

Just say NO to Vrabel and Gruden.

They're also looking at Joe Brady from the Bills.

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
I’m with SmashMouth. Forget the “offensive minded guys” let’s go hard nosed, tough and disciplined route with Flores. He was just beginning to build something when Miami showed him the door for that whack job they have now. This guy had coached under BB and MT so should have learned a few things in those stints. Question is what type of offense was he running in Miami and who was his OC at the time?

Loomis is going to run this team into the ground. That’s all I know.
1. Brian Flores 2. Marcus Freeman 3. Mike Vrabel 4. Aaron Glenn The only reason Glenn has fallen down my list is because he’s willing to let Loomis keep his people around. |
Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
There's been a picture of Gruden at the facility today with Carr, Haener and Moreau.
I swear, if Loomis hires that ball sack as our coach, I'll swap teams. |

Aaron Glenn might be okay. But I really dislike the combination of Loomis and Glenn.
We need a coach that won't be Mickey's yes-man. The more time goes on, that becomes my #1 criteria for the new HC. Flores, Vrabel, even Chucky seem better in that regard. |

Mickey just wants anyone he can control. Nothing will get better until we replace him as the GM |
Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
Oh yeah, I’d be 100% fine with Deion. The position coaches and coordinators would be top of the line and the respect in the locker room would be second to none.

Looks like the Pats are setting up for Vrabel to step in. They fired Mayo.

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
The Patriots really don't want the Jets to get Vrabel!

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
Bring in a HS coach.
1. Can not be worse than Allen. 2. A focus on fundamentals and discipline would be a fresh addition to this team. 3. Good luck finding tape on him/her. I do not care as long as I can not guess the next play which has been since the 1/2 time kick of SB44. |
Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
FWIW, Underhill stated the Saints are going to move slowly to hire the next coach in NO. He expects at least 10-12 people including college coaches they want to talk to.
Expect the search to be long and cast a wide net. |

Re: Saints have interest in Mike Vrabel, Gruden mentioned
In the Pete Carrol sort of direction, if we wanted to hire a caretaker coach, which I think could make sense in a rebuild, another option could be Gary Kubiak. He is basically the same age as Sean Payton, but has had some bad luck in the past with health scares. I think he is the type of leader who could preserve a winning culture even if we have 1-2 seasons where it is unlikely to actually win a lot due to a rebuild. I think we would be better off with Kubiak that Rizzi in most respects, and I dont think Kubiak would insist on a long term deal.

Would love to see them hire Glenn, but it's very possible he gets a better offer.
