Yes, and, no. 4:00 ET March 12 is the deadline for cap compliance concerning the top 51 cap figures. Restructures can, and will, continue to keep making additional space for all other purposes.

I meant for Carr's contract specifically

In a manner of speaking, probably. I mean, it may be possible to get to cap compliancy using every other restructure possible, but if his is vital to their plans, then yes, I suppose that would be their deadline.

Okay. Spotrac.com has a cool roster management tool that let's you apply conversions in a "what if" scenario. I was able to get the Saints to top 51 cap compliance without touching Carr using only base salary conversions to signing bonus. These take no input from the players.

Players converted:

Jordan
Hill
Kamara
Davis
Mathieu
Granderson
Ruiz
Shepherd

Total top 51 cap space available: $1,176,729

In other words, no, May 12th is not a hard deadline to restructure Carr.

Carr's 2025 base salary of $30 million becomes fully guaranteed on March 15, so March 15 would be the deadline to act if we cut Carr or if we did a restructure that involved an actual pay cut with the leverage of being able to cut Carr. After March 15, Carr would have no incentive to take any pay cut, because his salary would be guaranteed, so any restructure after that date would either be kicking the can, or adding future guarantees that exceed present reductions.

We definitely know how to kick the can.

We could also get a little further under the cap if any players elect to reduce salary to set up a June retirement, agree to a true salary reduction and restructure, or if any other players are willing to reduce their 2025 salary in return for a guaranteed 2026 bonus instead of a 2025 bonus (willing to get their check later). A restructure can reduce immediately salary 80% by being spread over 5 years, but if they take a true pay cut that reduces the total amount spread over those years, and if they take a 2026 bonus that could I believe be spread over 2026-2030 but they dont get their check until next March. If a player plans to retire, like Ram, they could reduce their salary to the vet minimum, then retire in June, so all the additional dead cap hits in 2026.

I think Kellen Moore makes a great coordinator. I'm not convinced he's a head coach though and I'm very worried about the hire. I hope I am very wrong.

When Payton was hired, he brought a wisdom and stability with him that I feel does not exist with Kellen Moore.

Payton also had Drew Brees. We got Carrbage now.

The 17th I think is related to his injury or status thereof. Its salary implications could be big. Both dates are probably very relevant .

So can we pencil in the old guys returning too ? ...

Taysom Hill (will not return from injury until at least late Oct/early Nov)
Mathieu
Cam Jordan

Oh, we didn’t manage to get our beloved Taysom Hill killed yet?
Just wait… there’s still time.

Did you feel as though Sean Payton had it in 2006?

I think it's fair to question his readiness to be a successful HC but I sure am impressed with the the staff he's assembled to support the effort...

I certainly hope so. If people are wanting us to tank why not bring back every invalid and senior citizen we can, right? But then, if they actually come through I would imagine feathers will be ruffled.

Agreed. I really didn’t know anything about SP when he came to NOLA. Moore is young. But he’s been successful. And I like him more than most of the other candidates we had.

Time will tell, but I’m optimistic at this point.

I did, and I know some might doubt it, but I was a believer in him all the way back to his days with the Giants.

Had to be what they were thinking ... They were going to lose a year anyway. Still, kicking the can makes little sense right now.

We all knew Carr was gonna be the starter this year. Or at least figured it was likely. I wanted them to eat the cap hit and get rid of him if they could but I knew it wouldn’t happen.

Regardless it looks like he’s more than likely done after this season. Still, this contract is horrible and it makes me really wonder what Carr’s attitude will be like this season.

Kellen Moore is coming from the Eagles, where their scouting department and GM is tops in the league.

Coach will find out quickly just how kicking a can down the road can either hinder or hurt a roster.

Re: CARR “STARTING” AS OUR QB NEXT YEAR?

For what it's worth...

Quote:

On the surface, the Saints’ decision to exercise their right to restructure quarterback Derek Carr's contract ties player to team for 2025. At a deeper level, a change remains possible.

Specifically, Carr could still be traded — if, of course, he'll waive his no-trade clause.
Multiple teams, we're told, were monitoring whether the Saints would release Carr. The Saints could have done it, assuming he would have passed a physical, given his late-season hand injury. It would have avoided $30 million in 2025 pay that had been guaranteed for injury only.

Instead, the Saints took the $40 million, reduced Carr's salary to $1.255 million, and dropped the $38.745 million difference into a guaranteed payment.

Guido is right. There were multiple factors in why the team lost last year, one of the least of which was Carr’s play at QB. We saw how well the team could play when healthy. The first two games, they didn’t just win, they outright dominated. Even in the third game when the injuries started to creep in, they came very close to beating the eventual SB champs. Of the games they lost, 6 of them were within a TD, even with a depleted roster, riddled with injuries. Couple that with the 5 they one, and this team could have been easily 11-6.

Some good points and a realistic perspective, however all teams were dealing with injuries, not just us. I think our bigger problem was we lacked good depth and got out coached on many occasions.

You bring up a good point, but according to the Adjusted Games Lost stats, no team lost more games as a direct result of injuries than the Saints.

All factors combined, and after all is said and done, if y’all still don’t think that the Raiders knew EXACTLY what they were kicking to the curb, stay tuned…
You’ll have a whole new batch of excuses for this Carrbage again this year.

Raiders kicked Carrbage to the curb years ago. You’ve been licking the shovel we used to scoop him up since then, and it still AINT clean. This coming season, you’ll be getting hit in the head with it, repeatedly. That’s just you. 😉
