Neither did I.

But, wish him well. I could definitely see him doing some commentary or sports talk show somewhere.

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement

Its been on my radar all offseason that multiple aging Saints vets could potentially retire. Obviously Ram already did, and surprisingly Carr did. The order of probability was something like Ram, Hill, Jordan, Mathieu, Davis, and then some longshots like Olave and Kamara. Realistically any older or injured player who takes a pay cut or has declined a lot might be a candidate to retire. Doing so after June 1 helps our cap.

Some of the guys you have on that list just seems like people you’d like to see retire. Not guys that actually are ready to hang it up. Lol.

Ram is obvious.

Well, Carr was the guy I liked to see retire.

With Cam and Davis, they have already taken pay cuts, and their play has declined, but they were still able to contribute last year, Davis as a starter and Cam as a rotational player. It is not at all clear that Cam will start this year, with Chase Young getting paid, Granderson the best player on the defense, a loaded training camp roster on dline, and a new defense where its possible that guys like Bresee could move to the outside. If Cam or Davis had a tough time getting back into playing shape, found themselves a step slow and worried about a reduced role, or faced a lot of aches and pains in camp, it would really not be that surprising if one or both decided they would rather retire than fight through pain for a roster spot and playing time at an already reduced salary.

Hill is probably the most popular and beloved player in Saints history but he is coming off a torn ACL going into his age 35 season with a long injury history and a highly physical style of play. Additionally, Hill's contract has not been restructured (a big anomaly for the Saints) and his salary is not guaranteed. It would not at all be surprising for Hill to retire, reach an injury settlement, or agree to a reduced salary that sets up a year on IR followed by a likely retirement in June 2026 much like Ram did in 2024. Hill's $10 million salary for 2025 is at least not a reduction, so he could be tempted to stick around for the check, but the money is not guaranteed. There have been articles about Hill possibly retiring or being cut from major journalists:

https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/fo...ans-uncertain/

Olave clearly does not want to retire. His 2026 salary will more than double his previous earnings, and he stands to make far more on a long term contract. But he is one or two concussions, medical exams, or symptoms from having no choice in the matter, or having a family member make the decision for him. I am ok with Olave playing out his deal, but have no interest in the Saints betting a large percentage of their salary cap on him long term. I would like to see him traded.

Kamara is set to have his last good earning season this year, so he is likely to take the check and try for one last run at 1000 yards. But as we have seen star athletes can be unpredictable, and it wouldn't be that surprising to see him walk away if his body or heart tells him this isn't the year. I believe he has saved most of his money. If he feels a step slow and senses this is a rebuilding year, I wouldn't be that surprised if he decided to walk away, similar to Malcolm Jenkins or Tyrann Mathieu.

Re: Tyrann Mathieu Announces Retirement

TM had a great NFL career. Just turned 33. Has lost a step.

This wasn’t “sudden”. He probably advised the team months ago.

New HC, new direction. Embrace the rebuild. Youth movement.

Demario & Cam will likely say bye bye in 2026.

Enjoy your retirement Honey Badger.
