Garrett Nussmeier Draft Prospect

I was thinking about the situation where one Nussmeier, one of the top 3 QB prospects in the upcoming draft and possibly a high 1st round pick, is the son of the Saints OC.

One of the common explanations for why Shedeur Sanders fell in the draft was that because Sanders father was a coach who had been discussed for NFL jobs, coaches felt that if they drafted Sanders they would be lining up their own replacement, as any struggled would lead to clamor for Sanders to join the team as his sons head coach. And even GMs may have felt the same, as coaching changes often come with GM changes, especially when the new coach is selected for a relationship with a player or owner not the GM's choice.

One thing I haven't heard is how this might apply even more to Nussmeier. As an NFL offensive coordinator who won a ring as a QB coach, Nuss would seem to be a better head coaching candidate than a .500 college coach from Colorado. Do you think that head coaches would be concerned that if they draft Garrett Nussmeier in the 1st round, they could be lining up their own replacement in Doug Nussmeier as head coach? And if so, could this actually be an advantage for the Saints who may not have that concern since Nussmeier is already on their staff?

For example, if the Panthers select Nussmeier and he showed promise but didnt have success with their current coaching staff, it could be easy to see them bring in Doug Nussmeier as head coach, if he was having success improving the Saints offense, and given his connection to his son. But if the Saints drafted Nussmeier and had some friction, it seems less likely that they would fire their own head coach and promote their OC, given that their head coach and OC are both offensive coaches coming from the same system and Kellen Moore is actually younger than Doug Nussmeier. If the offense was successful, it would be hard to fire Moore. If the offense was unsuccessful, it would be hard to argue that an older coach who was part of that system and runs the same system is the solution.

So, IF Nussmeier develops into a QB the Saints would want in the 2026 draft, perhaps the Saints have an advantage to getting him, that could lead to him falling to the Saints. For the 31 other teams, he comes with potential coaching controversy. For the Saints he doesn't, plus he could actually help the Saints retain their OC if the offense is successful, as Doug might be less likely to field head coaching offers if he was coaching his own son.

I for one am only interested in seeing what we have now .... this yet to be played season .... rather than surmising over overthought scenarios next season. But boredom at this point of the offseason does generate all sorts of frivolous conjecture, I suppose.

I just want to move into season two with our Offensive Rookie of the Year and go for a back to back Lombardi next season.

Fair enough, but at the same time its not like we have an overabundance of new threads, and if we are posting about mason tipton that probably sets a low bar.

Re: Garrett Nussmeier Draft Prospect

Yeah... a lot of IFs. Let's see what we have in the Bayou Rattler and/or Shoughster. If the Saints are fortunate enough to hit one one of those, Nussmeier won't even be in the picture as an option next year. That's really what we want at the end of the day.

If both turn out to be viable options, we'll have tradeable draft capital to work with, another positive. On the other hand if both are compete busts, we'll perhaps be in the convo for a QB next year. The more likely scenario is they're developing but middling QBs, to start. That's a tougher road to navigate, IMHO, maybe. We won't be in the top drafting positions to land what most consider is needed to acquire a franchise QB. That being said, the Eagles gave Hurt a little patience and he developed nicely. And he was not a first rounder. Plenty of examples history has shown, both ways.

Too early to tell at this point. We're simply in discovery mode on what we have. Colston was basically a Tipton story.
