Saints report: Running back Chatman released

Chatman released: Running back Jesse Chatman, who was acquired from the Miami Dolphins three weeks ago to fill the void left by the injured Deuce McAllister, has been released by the New Orleans Saints, coach Jim Haslett said Wednesday.

The Saints were not pleased with the work ethic Chatman had displayed since his arrival.

"I cut a player because of things that were happening in the locker room and things that were happening off the field," Haslett said. "He's gone because I'm not going to surround our team with those types of players."

The Saints had traded a seventh-round selection in the 2006 draft to Miami, but that was based on the condition of Chatman rushing for 300 yards. Since Chatman never appeared in a game for the Saints, they won't have to give up the pick.

McKinnon still starting: Middle linebacker Ronald McKinnon, who started in place of Courtney Watson last week after Watson was arrested for driving while intoxicated, will remain in the starting lineup Sunday.

Haslett said his decision wasn't based on purely disciplinary or strategic reasons, but rather "a little bit of both." Watson is expected to see the bulk of his action on third downs.

Getting healthy? The Saints' lengthy injury report finally is starting to look a bit more manageable. Only two players — tight end Ernie Conwell (out three to six weeks with a knee injury) and linebacker T.J. Slaughter (groin) — are unlikely to be available against Chicago on Sunday.

Wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim (ribs), cornerback Mike McKenzie (shoulder) and tight end Shad Meier (hip) all practiced Wednesday.
