Forecast: Showdown Monday for the Saints?
So it’s come to this. If media reports are correct, Jim Haslett supposedly will give Tom Benson an ultimatum today: either give me an extension and total control or I’m leaving. ESPN says Haslett will use legal action to get out of his contract if necessary. Of course, Tom Benson says he’ll sue to remain in San Antonio in 2006 so his team can continue to practice in some of the finest parking lots in America. I’m guessing Benson will not give Haslett his extension and willin essenceforce Haslett to coach the team in 2006. Why would Benson do that? Because firing and hiring a coach costs money and would distract Tom from the one thing he seems entirely focused on: creating the San Antonio Saints. You might call it ‘showdown Monday.’ It’s Haslett versus Benson and Benson versus apparently everyone. In the season that never had a chance, here is a question that no one ever mentions, “Is Tom Benson a big factor in the team’s struggles along with Katrina and the injuries? I’ll cast my vote for ‘yes’ and here’s why: imagine if Benson had focused his efforts on doing what gave his team the best chance to win instead of spending his time trying to create the San Antonio Saints? Without an owner hell bent on picking up his team and fleeing the scene, would the Saints have had one less major distraction and consequently been more successful on the field? Perhaps the 2005 Saints season, like my grandmother’s furniture in her Lakeview house, just was unable to be saved. I believe any chance the Saints had this season died in weeks 6 and 7, when the Black and Gold lost back to back games to the Falcons and Rams in heart breaking fashion; due to their own mistakes and a couple by the referees. The team had its heart ripped out and any real fight it had was gone as soon as Ernie Conwell’s non-fumble was returned for a touchdown. If the Saints had won those two, everything would have been different; but alas, nothing went their way and after yesterday’s 27-10 beat down, they are perhaps the league’s worst. But how much of the 2005 disaster is Benson’s fault? Again, I say a huge part. Could you imagine the late Wellington Mara or Art Rooney doing to their cities what Benson has done? In a way, I’m happy that Benson has chosen this route if it’s true. No more BS, no more lies from Tommy B (except the ones about the Saints facility not being salvageable and the whole New Orleans-area being unlivable). We can now get down to the end game: Benson and his looter-like San Antonio cohorts versus the rest of America. Stay tuned. http://www.wwltv.com/sports/saints/s....25f4cf00.html |
