Breaux Bridge native has wide fan base

BATON ROUGE -- A boy wearing a Jake Delhomme jersey stood near the entryway to the visiting locker room waiting for the Carolina Panthers to leave the Tiger Stadium field.

A middle-aged couple with Delhomme jerseys stood there, too. So did an older woman wearing the Panthers' No. 17 and a nearby man with a beer.

Delhomme, the quarterback whose home is less than an hour away in Breaux Bridge, didn't let down his supporters.

In a workmanlike performance, he completed 13 of 21 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, with one interception and one fumble, in the Panthers' 27-10 victory Sunday against the Saints. He also scored on a two-yard sneak.

It was Delhomme's second game in Tiger Stadium. He said he played in an all-star game there in 1993.

Coming back had no special meaning to him, he said.

"It means nothing except a win," Delhomme said. "It's only a 45-minute drive instead of an hour-and-45 minute drive for my family."

Delhomme said his family sat behind the Panthers' bench. He guessed that from 30 to 50 family members attended.

He got off to a fast start.

On third-and-five on the Panthers' first possession, Delhomme found wide receiver Drew Carter open behind cornerback Jason Craft. The pass hit Carter in stride for a 40-yard gain -- his first NFL catch.

"It was a play I could have had my choice," Delhomme said. "I loved my matchup with Drew. . . . He's a guy with a lot of speed. You want to get something started. It was third down. We were awful on third down last week."

Two plays later, wide receiver Steve Smith scored from the 20 on an end-around. "It was a play I called in the huddle," Delhomme said. "We just put it in this week."

"I got some great blocking from the offensive line," Smith said.

In the last two minutes of the first half, Delhomme led a 64-yard scoring drive that gave the Panthers a 17-7 lead. A 30-yard pass to fullback Nick Goings put the Panthers on the Saints' 13. Three plays later, Delhomme called his own number, scoring on a sneak without being touched.

Except a quarterback that does not take a team out of the game in the first half

Delhomme has a 95.6 in the first half
Brooks has a 80.7 in the first half ...
