Brees has dislocated shoulder, could need surgery.
SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers quarterback Drew Brees has a dislocated right shoulder, coach Marty Schottenheimer said after the Chargers' 23-7 loss to the Denver Broncos on Saturday.
Schottenheimer said Brees will undergo tests on his labrum and might need surgery. Brees dropped back to pass from his end zone late in the second quarter and was blindsided on a blitz by safety John Lynch. Brees fumbled and was hit again while going for the ball, which was recovered by Denver's Sam Brandon at the 1-yard line. Tatum Bell scored on the next play to give the Broncos a 14-0 lead. Brees was examined on the sideline, then was taken to the locker room. He was replaced by Philip Rivers, who finished the game for the Chargers. Brees left immediately after the game and did not talk to reporters. Although the Chargers already had been eliminated from the playoffs, coach Marty Schottenheimer didn't plan to use Rivers, a second-year pro, unless Brees got hurt. Rivers had been in for one play this season, taking a knee to end a 48-10 win over Buffalo on Nov. 20. Rivers played in two games as a rookie in 2004. The No. 4 pick in the 2004 draft, he was obtained from the New York Giants along with a handful of picks for Eli Manning. http://x.go.com/cgi/x.pl?goto=http:/...010101&srvc=sz Fat chance of anyone hoping that we trade for Phillip Rivers now. Unless they trade up to a top pick for him and their first round pick and sign another veteran. Brees' days in San Diego are over if he has surgery. |

I would have traded a healthy Brees for Brooks in a heartbeat. If his injury is too serious, I wouldn't take that chance now. But, didn't Brees only sign a one-year deal after they franchised him? So he's probably a free agent after the season. Can anyone help me with that?

Hey D, I believe he is a FA at the end of this season, so we might be able to cut Brooks and pick him up, once again if the injury is not to serious.

I think he is, too, Cher. I'm searching now for contract status on him, but I can't find anything. He may be available for cheap if he has surgery and it isn't too serious. Some teams may not want to take a chance on him. I just have a feeling if the Saints draft a QB, Brees won't want to come in here to be a mentor to another rookie. He'll want to go somewhere that his job is more secure. Somewhere like Arizona, New York Jets (because I think Pennington is about done there), Baltimore, Oakland, or even Chicago depending on where they stand with Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.

yeah I think his contract is up but I got news for everyone... they are going to re-sign Brees and play him, its his job to lose and he hasn't lost it yet. Why if you are a winning ballclub would you ditch your QB who wins for you??? Rivers, they aren't going to get what they want for him and i really feel they will keep him for insurance for the future ect. Chargers aren't stupid, this day in age you need two QB's

Okay send them AB and Howard for a banged up QB and a Number 2 in this years draft. They need defensive help. Throw in Sullivan if needed if he does not redo his contract. Use that money to keep Bentley.

people want to trade away the whole team for Brees but I don't care who you have behind center if you don't have a good D and supporting cast you aren't going anywheres... hell look at the Great Farve... where did they get...
