First, the Saints need to pick up a few key free agents in order to be competative next year. We can't realistically expect the draft to fill all the needs for this team.
I agree. But I can pass on this one.
Second, the buzz is that the Saints are going to have a hard time picking up free agents due to the condition of the city and the unsettled-ness of the franchise. (I don't know if this will prove to be true or not, but for argument, let's assume that free agents aren't going to be lining up in Metarie to play for us)
This was being mentioned before the franchise had a direction. We know they will be in New Orleans for at least another year or two, if not longer.
Third, we have one elite WR who seems to be deteriorating physically. We have 2 other high draft pick WRs that still aren't regular contributors. So it might be nice to bring in another option at the position. I wouldn't relish the idea of 10 weeks of Stallworth one side and Henderson or Hakim on the other.
There will be other free agent wide receivers, not of his caliber, but not high-risk, like TO.
Fourth, TO needs a place to play and a place to rehab his image (to what extent he can. please hear me say that "rehabbing" will mean washing a bit more mud off of the pig). Coming to New Orleans gives him opportunity to say nice things like "I'm here to help this franchise and this great city get back on it's feet".
If you think your normal free agent wouldn't want to sign here, what makes you think the biggest ego in the NFL would? He will control where he goes, my money says he's a Bronco by training camp.
Fifth, I doubt TO will be generating interest in a top dollar contract. He should be affordable for a single season.
He'll get paid- that's how all this BS started.
Sixth, as in Philly's super bowl run, TO can be a great team mate and league leading WR for a single year. I don't think that GT is suggesting that we draw up a multi gazillion dollar deal to guarantee that TO retires a Saint. But for one year, he could really be a nice pickup. I wouldn't even suggest giving him an extension past one season, unless we're talking a year to year arrangement, but he bites every organization he's with past the first year.
Teammate? Come on, BMG. I worked with a guy like this. Loud, obnoxious, but had skills. Led the sales team, but eventually took down half the company, to further his own gains. No thanks, I'll pass.
Seventh, collossal A-hole or not, the guy has skills. Defenses have to account for him all the time. A recovering Deuce would probably like that he's never going to see 8 in the box with TO on the field.
Risk-vs-reward.
Eighth, the guy is totally self centered. He's no more a cancer than any number of other guys who have played in this league or on this team. Conrad Dobler anyone? I don't want the guy to teach sunday school, but for 16-20 games, he's sure good at catching the football.
Dobler was loved by his teammates, it was the players that he played against that hated him. That, I like.
GT is dead right in his larger point. We must have free agent help for next year. Is there anyone out there that we might be able to attract or should we pursue?
Not sure, haven't checked. Too busy watching tivo'd college games
