RE: Senior Bowl news & notes
Few things....
1. I watched last year's Colorado bowl game against UTEP, I think it was the Alamo Bowl, and got to see that Klopfenstein kid. The guy made some of the sickest grabs I've ever seen a TE make. Wouldn't mind picking him up if he's impressive in the combine and still available in the later rounds. 2. Seems to be a lot of fairly good receivers in this draft, even if there isn't one huge playmaker. If Skyler, one of the three guys from Auburn, or a guy like Moss was there in a later round, I think we would have to consider taking one of them to give Leinart some more targets to throw to. (Also, Skyler and Moss could contribute on returns and are both very good on reverses). 3. Tons of linebacking depth here. Still think we go QB with #2, then take LB with #34. I think that would help our needs the most. 4. Tons of overall defensive talent this year. Think we could grab a very good guy for our secondary or DLine in the 4th or later. 5. I'm very excited for this draft. With a new coach and a new defensive coordinator, I believe that this franchise has a lot of promise. |
RE: Senior Bowl news & notes
sounds more like a beauty pagent than a real look at talent.
i could careless how someone looks. it only matters how they play. |
RE: Senior Bowl news & notes
I don't think anybody said it was a "real look at talent." It's the first stage of a long process, and you start out at the most basic of examinations, a physical. It is good to hear whether or not some of these guys are cut and built, or flabby and soft.
|
The main thing is you get an accurate look at how big the players really are. Colleges seem to add an inch or two and five to ten pounds to players. I remember when Roy Williams was a freshman wr at Texas. Texas listed him at 6'5 210 pounds. When he was finally measured at the combine, he checked in at 6'2. That is just one example of schools inflating a players measurables. Schools also go crazy with forty times. It should be mandatory that everyone work out at the combine.

Interesting read. Thanks, Milians.

Klopfenstein is my favorite tight end in this draft. I'm impressed TheDeuce... I'm surprised anyone even knew who the guy was. I was extremely impressed after watching him play all last year and I've been a fan of his ever since. I definately would not mind drafting him in the later rounds of the draft to back up Hilton. The guy has some nice hands and most importantly, he's a good blocker.
|
Can you send me some information on the guy? I don't think I have any Colorado games except for the Texas-Colorado, and I'm afraid I might have already deleted it :jkool:
|
Please forget those games... Colorado got mauled twice and Klop didn't do much if anything in those games. His best games were last year... he regressed this season. But from what I've seen of him, I think he's a good add. I don't really have any numbers on the guy... pretty much gotta wait until the combine.

I would love to get a few of these guys, especially after drafting "The HawK". Just for your Deuce, now your turn to go off. |
From what I saw on NFL Network last night Jay Cutler had a strong showing yesterday and at least one analist had him rated above Leinart and Young. And at least he showed up.

So far, breaking footage down from the game, a couple names that have stood out. Mike Hass - WR - Oregon State Vickiel Vaughn - S - Arkansas more to come.... |
Vickiel Vaughn went to my high school and played ball with my older brother. I've seen him play at both the high school and collegiate levels. The guy always seems to be around the ball, and he was definitely the leader of Arkansas' defense this last season. He is also one of the reasons why Arkansas almost pulled out the upset of LSU this season. THe guys is good. And he's kind of flying under the radar right now.

I would love to see one of those top 5 OLBs waiting for us at the 34th pick (especially Howard or Carpenter, even if it's highly unlikely). However, Cher, most of those guys do look good. Few things... 1. I am scared of taking another player from UGA, just a bad feeling. (Jean-Gilles). Especially somebody's who labeled as soft and flabby (sound familiar???) 2'. D'Qwell Jackson is a complete stud, I would love to see the Saints show some interest in him. 3. Definitely don't think we need to waste one of our top two picks on a DE, no matter how good they are. I think that is the one position that we are set on. 4. Want to know more about Hank Baskett, Mr. Big, Tall and Cut. |

Do you know how fast he is? I've been trying to find some 40 times, but may have to wait until the combine. |

if that's the case, that's pretty damn good for a guy his size.
|
Was Maylock thankyou, was late last night, and as for "trendy alternative", having watched all three play over the past two years he, he has by far the strongest arm, good size and durability with less talent around. Reminds me of Farve, and one is entitled to there opinion. He gives the best shot at a vertical passing game. If the playbook is going to be swing passes and 15 yard slants than Lienart is a better option, but I don't see Roger Craig or Jerry Rice on the depth chart.
And personally, I thing Line backer and O line should be this years priorities. |
Not sure about recent times. Ran a 4.4 when he got to Arkansas, but that was before he packed on about 30 pounds of muscle. Probably slowed him down a bit, but he probably runs 4.45-4.5 range.

That one analyst from the NFL network's senior bowl coverage is all over Cutler. I think he is taking it too far by calling Cutler the number one QB in the draft. I would take Cutler in the second round but not in the first. I have watched him play for years at Vandy, and I just wouldn't feel comfortable with him as a first round pick. The analyst was taking every chance to kiss his ass throughout the telecast. I'm not trying to bash Cutler, but I just don't think he is worth a first round pick.
|
That's Mayock for you. I trust his judgement more than I do Kiper's.
What Kiper does, that Mayock doesn't, is take into account where players should fall in the draft. Hard for me to explain, as Mayock will tell you what he thinks about an individual players, standards be damned. |
Hardly an expert but being from Jersey and having to watch the Giants and Cowboys way to much, (Don't get me wrong have not missed more than 4 Saints games in 6 Years)where he was both OC and QB coach, (although having the reighns pulled from him in NJ) down the field throwers seem to thrive under his offense. I don't have time to go searching for stats but recollection would be that both offenses streached the field and all the quarter backs under both systems, Collins, Bledsoe, and even cokehead (Carter was it) before him in Dallas had better than average arms so, I would say of the three top options at QB in the draft:
I must predicate this first by saying I would agree that Leinart may be the one most ready to start (This Year), but not without a vast improved line and running game. And I do not believe any of the three will see playing time to start the season. However, if we are to look say to 2007 and beyond. I would say Cutler would be the better choice for the team and system that will more likley by in place. He has the big time arm can read defenses and is mobile, Vince Young is my second choice, He can through and contrary to popular opinion was the most recent memory the most accurate passer in college, this year. He has an arm that can get the ball downfield and has the ability to break tackles and make plays happen with his feet. Leinart would be third. He needs outlets and floats the ball. Chad Pennington had one good year and his arm is as weak if not weaker than Pennigtons. With a true west coast offense similar to say the Sea Pigeons up there in Seattle where he need not spend time in the pocket and get hit he would be a very successful quarterback, but I don't thing he would last long going against the Defenses in the NFC South for to long twice a year. And like I said just an opinion. |
I don't think his arm is weaker than Pennington's. But we shall see.
Bledsoe threw almost 90% of his passes within 30 yards of the line of scrimmage last year, which means, they threw on average about 2-3 long balls a game. You know by seeing the Cowboy games that they like to run alot of two tight end sets, which could explain alot of this. I just don't see where one QB would have a distinct advantage over another. And right now, all things considered, I'll stick with Lienart on my selection. I could be wrong, he could be the next Ryan Leaf, but that's the way the draft rolls, and I feel that his intelligence of the game is what edges him from his peers. |
Your entitled to your opinion and only time will tell. I just was never impressed, due to all the weapons he had and the offensive line blocking that gave hime the time to make the read/reads against arguably the worst defenses in the nation in the PAC 10. I just don't see how he fits in with the current talent and without the Dan Marino release with the bum knee. I guess I am more impressed with a guy thats able to perform with less.
Where the offense is conserned the numbers may be 90% for Bledsoe not sure, but the treat of the deep ball was always there and they did stretch the field with deep outs and seam passes in the 20 to 30 yard range. Collins did that quite often as a Giant as well as Quincy Carter (anyone from Texas will corect me here I am sure)and arm strength as well as accuracy dictate those receptions. The floaters have a tendancy to get picked a little more in the NFL. But personnally I'd rather see a LB or LT taken with a trade down scenerio. |
He could be right about Cutler, you never know. He is entitled to his opinions and I respect his opinions. I just don't agree with this one. All of the so-called draft "experts" are wrong from time to time. Remember Kiper's opinions on Chris Spielman? He was way off. For my money the most accurate draft guide comes from Pro Football Weekly. Kiper, to me, is a close second. Cutler could end up being just as good as Leinart or Young, I just wouldn't be as comfortable drafting him in the first round. From what I've seen of the NFL Network's coverage of practice this week, Whitehurst looks as good if not better than Cutler. If I am investing first round money in a QB this year, give me Leinart or Young. Everyone else can wait till at least round two.

Leinart & Bobby Carpenter
|
i thnk stovall will be good in the nfl. he probably learned a lot this year. he is tall and strong.
|
If we have to go QB then LB I say trade down about 4 spots and still get Cutler with about 8 to 10 other draft picks and maybe a veteran QB to boot. The we can take Sims, Jackson or Carpenter at #34. You have alot more chances to get good picks with 15 then you do with 7.
|
I love the idea Cherm (as much as I like Leinart), but no one will give us that much. Only our GMs are that stupid.
