Decision on Brooks Coming Soon

loomis said a decision on aaron brooks future with the saints would be made in the coming weeks, with input from payton and staff....................
if that is true, brooks is gonna be judged by film, don't you think?
and if that's the case, he's probably out the door, huh?
or, maybe a decision has already been made..........................
either way, i don't see him winning a starting spot in training camp in a couple of weeks if that is true, because training camp won't even start by then.
interesting.............................smitty

RE: Decision on Brooks Coming Soon - Re-Titled

I think he'll be the starter by default unless Leinart performs really well in training camp. Wouldn't it suck if Brooks all of the sudden lit the world on fire throwing 35 td and 13 picks? Then the organization would try to re-sign the next off season and we'll have a Brees/Rivers situation here. Damn... I just jinxed it!

RE: Decision on Brooks Coming Soon - Re-Titled

I wouldn't care if he threw 55 TD's & only 1 INT. He's still Aaron Brooks. Sure, one good year, a fat payday & wham!!, we're back to the same old Brooks. He's already robbed this team for 6 years worth of salary after that one good year. If we're lucky, we'll get some kind of decent 3rd or 4th rounder for this moron. Yes, he has all the physical tools. He can throw a ball through a barn door with that arm! The sad part though, is that you cannot teach someone common sense & Brooks doesn't have any. He's dumb as a sack of bricks!! This is a guy we cut the playbook in half for & still had to make him an armband with pictures!!!!!!!!

It's time to take out the trash!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry guys. I'm just not so quick on the crucifiction bit as far as AB goes.
Pros: Mobile, quick, strong arm.
Cons: Butterfingers, not the best decision maker.

What if Coach payton can work something out and help AB?!?!?!?

My biggest concern, however, is not so much get rid of Brooks as it is keep the 6 million and get rid of Brooks. 6 million in the FA market is huge.

You forgot: Sucks under pressure, doesn't know how to use a pocket, can't distinguish the difference between a WR & a CB, can't learn a playbook, doesn't study game film, doesn't know how to lead his receivers, stares down his receiver for at least 2 seconds before throwing to him, locks on to one receiver & doesn't see the whole filed, & is dumb as a sack of bricks!

It's time to take out the trash!!!

Once again, you cannot teach common sense. It's something you either have or don't have. Brooks doesn't have it!

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Decision on Brooks Coming Soon - Re-Titl

So be it!! Then the priority would be to save up the 6 million. But wasting most of that money on Lienart would be a serious mistake.

mjf150 02-21-2006 02:46 PM

Continuing to spend money on Brooks would be a waste. Putting it toward Leinart, would not be.

Leinart may not be a proven NFL commodity, yet. But Brooks has proven that he is not. Even when, by all accounts, he has one of the most talented teams on paper around him. Just think of all the opportunity that we have already wasted.

FatiusJeebs 02-21-2006 02:49 PM

Good point mjf but...funny thing about our players on paper....they managed to lead the league in dropped passes. Have we been lied to about the talent we possess? And why would it not be a bad idea to cough up millions to Lienart? We could use that money to sign successful FA's

mjf150 02-21-2006 03:11 PM

Nothing in the NFL is guaranteed, including signing "successful FA's". Ask Buffalo how the Bledsoe experiment went? Or the Saints about Kerry Collins? Or talk to the Browns about Garcia? Ironically, none of the potential FA QB's have really proven themselves on their former team as much as the one's I named. In fact, there have probably been just as many cases of FA busts as Draft busts.
As far as "dropped passes", that can be as much as Brooks' fault as the recievers. There are only so many "shoe-string-catches" and "diving-grabs" that can be expected of a WR.

FatiusJeebs 02-21-2006 03:30 PM

You are lucky I dig your avatar mjf. LOL. I do know that most of those dropped passes were in fact....right in the numbers/hands type. <Sigh>....this is getting frustrating...I think I'm gonna be a Falcons fan this year. (Make sure I get shot first before that happens though...Thanx!)

mjf150 02-21-2006 03:40 PM

Maybe alot of the balls were in the numbers/hands, but if your QB doesn't know that your not supposed to throw a 90 mph fast ball on a 5 yard pass, it would make the ball awful hard to complete. There in lies just part of the problem, AB doesn't have the ability to know the difference. Honestly, how many times have you watched him throw a pass and thought to yourself, "Damn, he put way too much on that ball!"?

jrmllb 02-21-2006 06:39 PM

there are teams desperate enough to take a chance on AB...Vikes, Jets, Fins....I think that Saban will try to jump up in the draft and get Cutler or even high enough to get Young...The qb market is going to be big this year...I hope we can get something for AB...

...you should not drink while watching the game...

...name ONE pass that Sack Hilton got not even on the numbers, just in front of him, during the entire season... here's a 6'8" TE who gets passes low and behind..... Brooks throws consistenly behind his receivers... ..and I have heard the "if it hits your hands'" thing, but that is utter nonsense... unless you have stick-um, some passes are just physically impossible to bring in.
Now, I am NOT saying that the WR's and the TE's don't drop balls, because they all do... but the way Brooks throws a pass, I tend to give more credit to the WR's for catching them than for Brooks throwing them...

... besides, what else can Payton do?
Assure him he cannot lose his job unless he dies? Already tried, didn't work
Cut the playbook in half? Already tried, didn't work.
Simplify the play calling? Already tried, didn't work.
Leadership classes? Already tried, didn't work.
Find escape goats? Already tried, didn't work.
Give it more time? Ain't 6 years enough?

Think about this: Brooks was Mike McCarthy's project. It was McCarthy who convinced Holmgren to draft Brooks in Green bay. It was McCarthy who convinced Mueller to bring in Brooks. It was McCarthy who convinced Haslett Brooks was "QB-2A" even before Brooks set foot in the State of Louisiana. Don't you think that Mike McCarthy did everything in his power to make Brooks succeed?

.. actually, the only thing that I can think of that has not been tried, is bringing in competition for the starting QB spot.... now that's an idea... and I am sure, should the Saints draft Leinart, that Leinart would win that battle....

...

xan 02-21-2006 08:33 PM

Hey T-R, I really need an escape goat. Where can I get one?!!! lol! I gotta create an Icon for that....

I'm with you on the assessment of dropped passes. ZH was credited with a dropped pass in the end zone against da bears that he had to literally jump as high as he could just to graze the ball with his middle finger - he was wide open and stationary. It's a shame that there's even a solitary erg of momentum for keeping that dumb bastard AB.

TheDeuce 02-21-2006 09:05 PM

Brooks needs to go. It's that simple. If you've seen the Saints play in the lsat four years, then you understand this. Our receivers drop a crap load of balls, but AB also throws a lot of bad balls. Leinart should come in and replace him. He's one of the most accurate QBs ever to play in college... I think Matt Leinart = The Anti-Brooks

...oh, yeah, make fun of the spic's English... :bananajoy: :apu:

... I don't see Payton kepping him, though... other than Haslett and Co., and Atlanta (because of Vick's legs ) I don't think there's a coaching staff that wants to go into the season with half the playbook other teams have.

FatiusJeebs 02-22-2006 02:22 PM

Ok...FINE!!! I see how it is. You are ALL off my buddy list! LOL. Seriously though you wanna get rid of Brooks? So be it. Personally, I know I am like one of his few defenders but if he needs a fresh start and that Saints need a fresh start then lets do it....but Lienart is not the answer. At least not the right answer.

Question: Why do teams have coaches? If players could correct problems on their own, then why are coaches needed?

Brooks has spent his entire career in a single offensive system under two coaches: McCarthy and Sheppard. Both were his QB coach. Finally All of Brooks' starting years were spent under Haslett, who seemed to make it clear that Brooks was his guy no matter what.

Well there are new sherriffs and deputies in town. Payton is a QB coach who has made Testeverde, Collins, and Quicy Carter look like geniuses in the last 5 years. What's not to say that some proper coaching and proper motivation cannot get Brooks to play at a Pro Bowl level again. Put in the system and set your expectations. If Brooks meets them, then play him. If not then bench him, or cut him. See how he responds.

The issue with Brooks isn't about attitude, talent, mistakes, goofyness, or coaching. It's about money. The guy isn't worth $6 million per. The Saints cannot afford to pay him that money and make the changes necessary to make this team better.

At the end of the day, the money is going to determine the committment to Brooks. But I have a strong suspicion that Brooks' ego won't handle it properly. Instead of being humble, restructuring, taking the coaching from the new coaches, and proving he can be the starting QB, he'll trot out his overinflated ego and declare himself the next coming, and expect the Saints to pay the upcoming $6 million.

It won't happen. He'll be cut.

Any ideas what other teams will be offering free agent QBs this coming period?

Nope. I wake up and take a more moderate stance on Brooks every offseason.

That's refected here. He could have the opportunity to be the QB here. But not at $6 million. If he won't renegotiate to something cap friendly, then he has to go.

Note that has absolutely nothing to do with talent, fumblitis, throwing behind receivers, or grinning on the sidelines. The Saints can't afford a $8 million cap hit in the QB position.

OTOH if he done renegotiate to something like $3.5 million, then give him an equal shot.

.. I think you are reaaaaallllyy stretching those comments about Payton making Testaverde, Carter, and Collins?? - was Payton the QB's coach with the Giants in 2000? - look like geniuses...

... and Payton is not the QB's coach, he is the HC. I really hope he doesn't waste his time trying to "develop" a QB whose been in the league since 1999.

... it just boggles the mind... a strong arm and some mobility a QB do not make...

... so what if he only gets 3 mil? Or 2 mil? How's that going to improve the QB play?

i wouldn't mind kitna but i could handle another year under aroon if he takes a huge pay cut and we are drafting a guy to take over the next season. maybe under payton he could do a little better. i doubt it to be honest though. the guy just lacks something and i am not even sure what it is because it isn't talent. maybe his mind is just umm...

and hey someone on here after deuce got hurt last year said we should trade for ricky. not sure who but um um glad we didn't

Zach asked a legitamate question. Why shy away from the possibility T-R? You know that if Brooks has a good year next year that this board will get rather quiet. If there is one thing I do remember its that AB threw better passes when he was protected. So we restructure his contract and draft Brick for added o-line beef. Brooks all of a sudden has a QB Rating of like 130.5. LOL...Anything is possible T-R....even getting hit by trucks. ;0)

That'sa load. Brooks has NEVER, AT ANY POINT, NOT IN ANY SEASON, completed 60% of his passes. And last year was the first year our receivers led the league in "drops." The FACT is Brooks is inaccurate, has no pocket presence, and only seems to play in the late moments of games, although he seemed to have lost even that this year. He has gotten WORSE every year. That's the only thing consistent about him. I don't care if he agreed to PAY THE SAINTS to play here, his ass needs to go. It doesn't matter how cheap he is, it matters that HE IS NOT A GOOD QB. Period. No amount of money saved if worth that fact. If your house needed a roof, and some guy offered to do it for free but it would leak awfully, and another guy was gonna do it for $4000 but it would last you 30 years, are you going with the free guy simply cause he is free, even though you would get a shoddy roof? I don't think so. It's the same with Brooks, no amount iof pay cut is gonna make him a better QB. NONE. He's not worth a hill of jelly beans. He has to go.

zachsaints52 02-23-2006 09:17 AM

In 2003 he 59.1 % .... maybe not 60, but I bet he never had a line like the line that COULD be here next year. Bentley at Center, Holland and jean Gilles (2nd round, but use other 2nd rounder we get for the #2 pick trade use on LB), and Brick and Brown at T's.... Whats not to like there? Even if not Jean Gilles, Mayberry and Jcox could together work on the other Guard spot. I say give him one shot with a great o-line, but if he sucks, kick him out. I think this could work if he just has time.

FatiusJeebs 02-23-2006 09:29 AM

Hey whodi...you sound like AB bumped in to you at the mall one day and insulted your mom or something!! LOL...Seriously though what erks me the most is that Brooks has on quite a few occasions has shown signs of brilliance. (Whodi....hold your animocity for a sec and think back.) We've seen him throw the worst passes in the hands of the worst people many times. We've also seen him avoid getting sacked, run away from some of the fastest linemen and linebackers and throw perfect passes while still running. I honestly feel that Haslett's coaching and the not so great O-Line we have definitely contributed to some of AB's performance. Like most of you, however, there is one thing that gets to me.... how did that footbal keep slipping from his hand?!?!? Many times we've seen QB's thrive with one coach and completely fall apart under another. Who is to say that Payton's approach won't work for AB?!?!?

59.1 is not sixty, but keep looking, you'll never find it. And who cares about a COULD be line? Bentley is gone. No tag, he is gonna go someplace else. So your whole line idea just imploded. 6 years is long enough for any QB in the world in the same system. Haslett didn't force Brooks to not try and improve in the offseasons. Haslett doesn't force Brooks to not look at game pics on the sideline like most every other QB does to find ways to beat a defense. Haslett doesn't force Brooks to not work out ON HIS OWN with his receivers in the offseason. These are thing BROOKS could do himself to improve, but didn't and never has. Haslett did force Brooks to go to leadership classes though. Why would anyone want a QB that has to be TAUGHT leadership? Isn't that supposed to be natural considering you play the most important position on the field? And prob have since elem school? They could build a time machine and import the Dallas Cowboys Superbowl line back here, the fact is, the guy taking the snaps would still be Aaron Brooks, and that alone makes the whole situation a losing one.

The bad FAR FAR FAR outweighs the good Brooks has done. I have seen him outrun linemen, CAUSE HE DROPPED BACK INTO THE RUSH, or got too much depth on drops, allowing thelinemen to be beat. Ask yourself, when EVER have you seen Brooks simply step up in the pocket and make a throw? If someone breathes on him, he is spinning and backpedlaing. That is about a 0 on pocket awareness. But I am sure he has done it once or twice, it's the fact he doesn't do it CONSISTENTLY that kills the team. Your own statement outlines the problem with Brooks:

Quote:

That's the problem, you never know what you are gonna get from Brooks not just from game to game, at any given moment, and NO coach, team, or offense will EVER be successful with a QB like that. NEVER.

If there is one thing I do remember its that AB threw better passes when he was protected. So we restructure his contract and draft Brick for added o-line beef. Brooks all of a sudden has a QB Rating of like 130.5. LOL...Anything is possible T-R....even getting hit by trucks. ;0)

..and I gave him a legitimate answer... a what if question deserves a what if answer...

... yes sure, anything can happen... birds could fly North for the winter, right? After all, they have wings and a sense of direction.. but I doubt they are going to start flying North for the winter any time soon because I know that birds are flying away from the cold weather... comprende?

TR, and I am not saying this to disrespect anyone, but I think you and I both need to realize if after 6 years of seeing Aaron Brooks play, someone doesn't realize he is not the answer, they prob never will, and we are both wasting our breath. Brooks is just about gone, and we will have been arguing for nothing.
