Eagles | Rumor alert: Bentley might visit with team
Fri, 10 Mar 2006 23:24:22 -0800 John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports free agent C LeCharles Bentley (Saints) turned down a chance to visit with the San Diego Chargers, presumably to visit the Philadelphia Eagles instead. The Eagles might be willing to pay $6 million a year to sign Bentley. Now is this a smart thing to do at that price for a center/guard if that's his going rate? If I'm going to sign a OL for 6 million dollars or more a year, he better be a hella good left tackle.... but that's just me. Now if we were playing with monopoly money, I'd shell out 6 mil for Bentley too. |

RE: Come on you Bentley backers... respond
AP reports reports the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a deal with free agent OL LeCharles Bentley (Saints). A key member of another team, which also was interested in Bentley, said the Eagles had a deal in place with the center for close to a week, and waited through the several delays to the start of free agency. All the terms of Bentley's deal are not known, but according to the source he will earn a guaranteed $17.5 million over the first three years of the contract. More than half of that money will come in either a signing bonus, a roster bonus or a combination of both. The Eagles are expected to play Bentley at center.

The Browns have signed center LeCharles Bentley of New Orleans, the top-ranked player overall in ESPN.com's ratings of unrestricted free agents. The team also reached an agreement in principle with Atlanta Falcons left offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer, ESPN.com's 26th-rated free agent.

Both being paid 5 million annually I think. Good luck... if they're going to play him at center, throw Jeff Faine our way. Guess Bentley got what he's been wanting for the past year or so... and I'm happy we aren't playing 5 million per year for an unhappy camper.

And just because there are decent centers out there and we need a center doesn't mean that we're gonna get one of them. How often does it happen like that for us. The Saints will replace Bentley with a 3rd tier FA or a 3rd of 4th round draft pick. Seems like they have this cocky attitude towards it....kinda like...."we found you in the second round, we can do it again". Or maybe this push towards Witherspoon and Brees shows that the Saints are commited to bringing good players to NO. Hopefully they can land Brees and use the first round pick on Ferguson and all of this won't seem so bad. But however people try to rationalize letting Bentley go, it was a screw up. A line with Ferguson, Bentley and Brown would've been even more sick. |

Trust me, I'm not denying he was our best OL. I also agree he should be have been taken care of last year when his value isn't as high as it is right now. And yes, it was a screw up letting him go. But can you agree that the money he signed for was a bit much for a center/guard? The money we saved can be used elsewhere and I'm sure we'll make a very big signing or two before the draft. All the cap room better buy us some more wins dammit.

well you have to figure with our current set of guys under haz we were basically 8-8 every year. minus last season. you figure you get rid of fumbles and add some good free agents including hopefully brees we should be fighting for a wild card spot. add a lb, dt, and improve our o-line which isn't hrorrible but needs some improvement and i think we can get 10 wins. the thing that sucks is our frigan schedule is murder this year. well at least it looks like it is.
