Shooting the Brees

hey all, hope to be back a little more. i 've been way out of commission working in st. bernard parish. i would jump in all the drew brees talk but hopefully it will be resolved by the end of the day or tomorrow. we'll then be talking about what other FAs are possible to sign and what the draft strategy will be. the brees thing did remind me of a "If I Were GM" proposal i threw out after the '04 season. either it was in the pre '05 posts that are gone or i just can't find it. anyhoo it was something like this:

trade brooks to the niners (to be with mccarthy) for whatever draft pick you could get. they could then pick benson, brown, or williams at RB #1

trade howard to sd (they needed an edge guy) with a 3-4 rd pick for brees. (they wanted a #1 or high #2 at the time).
~~~~~
my take is that brees would be a good addition. this team has enough talent to go from 3-13 to division winner with the right coaching and personnel moves. in fact, has anyone mentioned that the past few years the last place nfc south team has won the division the next year? i do think leinart is the best QB prospect since manning. still, the risk of QB prospects is so very high, a whole lot more busts than winners. i'd feel very happy with brees with d'brick on the left and brown on the right or brees with a.j. hawk added to the D.
one more, i may have missed it posted here but i read somewhere that payton made the decision to go after brees rather than bet on leinart from counsel with bill parcells. if anyone is leery of young QBs it is parcells, LOL.
I heard that too at a dinner at a friends place last night...that Parcells advised Payton to go after Brees. If Brees signs with the Dolphins, we have no choice but to get Leinart. The fact that Brees hasn't signed yet may be a red flag. Perhaps he's envisioning greener pastures in Miami, and can you blame him??
RE: Shooting the Brees
Good to see you back LKelley. I like Brees, I think he's a very talented QB, but I know that myself, like many others on this site are afraid of giving $10 million a year to a guy coming off serious injury. Leinart might be risky, but in my opinion, it's less risky because of Brees' injury, Leinart would get less money, and Leinart is probably one of the most NFL ready QBs in the last 5 years.
RE: Shooting the Brees
from gbnreport.com-
(1:00 PM): Tea leaves suggest Saints still looking at QBs at #2... A little more information on an earlier report regarding QB Drew Brees' decision not to sign with New Orleans over the weekend and instead head to Miami today to talk with the Dolphins. In fact, reading between the lines of both Brees and New Orleans officials following the former Chargers' visit to the Saints it does not appear that Brees was given any assurances that the team would not still take a QB with the second pick overall this coming April even if Brees signed with the Saints. When asked the question at a post-visit news conference, new Saints' head coach Sean payton said for example, Payton said that signing Brees would give the Saints "flexibility" on draft day, but he wouldn't rule out drafting a QB at the #2 pick. Meanwhile, all Brees would say is that when asked if he talked to the Saints about their draft plans is that he was "not sure" what the Saints will do with the second pick", however, he did add that he "assumed they would not take a QB because once he signed he would be there "a long time."
RE: Shooting the Brees
John Clayton on sportscenter just said that the Dolphins plan on makign a decision by tonight. The Saints have offered more money and Brees and his agent are going to be in contact with the Dolphins again to see if they can come closer to the money the Saints offered. Clayton also said if we sign Brees we will stay put and draft Mario Williams.
RE: Shooting the Brees
Best defensive player in the draft....but we could trade down to the 4 spot and still get him.
