Saints | Bennett agrees to deal
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 11:10:02 -0800

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the New Orleans Saints have reached a contract agreement with free agent RB Michael Bennett (Vikings). Bennett, who will serve as the primary backup to RB Deuce McAllister, will sign a two-year contract worth $3 million. The deal also includes a $1 million signing bonus. Bennett can also earn $1 million in incentives in each year of the deal.
kffl reporting. Pretty good move

RE: Bennet Signs

Ok, just posted on ESPN.com, now I believe it. Great signing. Now we can use one or two picks on OL, and the rest on D. Also, Bennett is the kind of guy who could be a starter, so if we do lose Deuce again, it won't be that much of a drop off.

deucerulez 03-17-2006 01:51 PM

Great?!?!?...I dont know about that...what is he gonna do keep deuce company on the bench, while antowain does all the work???Maybe we can trade all our RB's for one healthy one.

What? How is this not a great signing? We just got a Pro Bowl RB for 2 years/ $3 million. He's got world-class speed, and when I say world-class, I'm not throwing it out there like it's something that everybody in the league has, he seriously has world-class speed. And actually, he wasn't injured once last season. So maybe his injury days are behind him. Not to mention, it'll probably be Steck doing the work if both Bennett and Deuce get hurt because I believe Antowain will be gone pretty soon.

deucerulez 03-17-2006 02:01 PM

so was deuce...operative word ....was....

TheDeuce 03-17-2006 02:14 PM

He had two freak incidents. He'll bounce back, look at Edge.

SaintsJam 03-17-2006 02:16 PM

Hey guys antowain is not on the team. According to the Free Agent List on ESPN.com, he is an UFA.

papz 03-17-2006 02:26 PM

Very good signing... things are looking up.

4saintspirit 03-17-2006 02:44 PM

I love it -- the guy has the ability to break it every down.

LKelley67 03-17-2006 03:05 PM

right on bruthas. 3 for 3 so far, i like'em all.

definite upgrade. i do think there is some chance he could replace and not supplement stecker since they have many similarities.. resign antowain in that case.

spkb25 03-17-2006 04:37 PM

well i like it. the guy isn't an every down back but could definitely come in for 10 carries a game. plus like i read somewhere if deuce can beat them up all game he can come in and with his speed break a couple of good ones. i like it. he is probably a nice option out of the backfield too

Great, now we need a veteran OT, C, CB and LB and we should be ok. I would really like to trade down and get the DT Nagata in the first round.

I looked first but I overlooked the post

All of the mock drafts, have Wroten from LSU still available in the second round. We can draft Brick in the first round and Wroten with our second round and fill two sports with players that can start right off the bat.

BJSim 03-17-2006 05:09 PM

http://www.neworleanssaints.com/news...articleid=2329

Well, another LB and a Safty were signed, does that help? LB Anthony Simmons and S Omar Stoutmire were also signed today.

gandhi1007 03-17-2006 06:33 PM

Great signing. Bennett is super fast. He has the ability to break one every time he touches the ball, much like Deuce did in 2002. We got off cheap, too. I'm really feeling positive about this new coach & the decisions the FO is making. And after signing 2 LB's in a week, it looks like we're getting the Brick House. After that, strictly defense. Strictly defense baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

CheramieIII 03-17-2006 06:46 PM

Excellent pick up. I guess RB is not a concern anymore. I would love to trade down with Denver and get both of their first rounders. That would virtually give us 3 first rounders since the draft is so deep this year.
Magold (C), Jackson (MLB) and Max Jean-Gilles (OG).

26DEUCE26 03-17-2006 07:00 PM

This is a very good signing I was worried about what they were going to do w/ the backup RB spot.

Call me crazy but I'd rather just have D'Brick and a second rounder with a potential trade with the Jets than trade with the Broncos and miss out on him totally.

Plus Denver only has pick 22 and 29. According to the draft value chart that only adds up to 1420 in points compared to our number 2 overall valued at 2600 points. Unless we get the rest of their picks for the draft(which wouldn't be worth it for us because of their late picks, plus ol Shanahan won't get his annual new stud RB) or a really good player or two they don't have the firepower to trade up to our spot.

In my opinion the draft value chart is overrated, especially with a deep draft like this one. I don't know about firepower other than if they offered me the 22nd and 29th for our #2 I would take it. I won't call you crazy, because I still think we should trade down to number 4 or 5 and draft Hawk.

spkb25 03-17-2006 07:21 PM

i would love to love to get etra picks especially if it included another number 1 next year but i am not sure we can let this brickshaw go. he really does wonders for our line if he is what everyone thinks he wil be. two first round tackles in two years. i thought brown played well last year real well for a rookie. add another guy that could do the same thing and next year and the years after we could be looking at something vey very unique. let me know what ya think

I would like to get Hawk, too. It looks like our FO is aiming for Ferguson, though. Either way I''m happy. Both are impact players that can start from day one.

Hey Cher, how was that vacation? You missed out on the Aaron Brooks departure party.

CheramieIII 03-17-2006 07:56 PM

I'm sorry I missed that party. The vacation was great took the wife to Seaworld, Ocean Beach and the San Diego Zoo. I think the zoo in Ft Worth is alot better than the one in San Diego. Glad to be back though, I actually missed some of you.

I agree with ya G, I don't think the Saints can screw this one up.

jergensl 03-18-2006 07:08 AM

if we pass on hawk we will be very very very very sorry...we really don't have 2 starting olb, but we do have 2 starting ot.

for crying out loud...he is a big ten lb that ran a 4.38. that is faster than the running backs in this draft. he was actually a better fb in college. that means we could pull some patriot tricks and use him as a goaline fb or te.

LongTimeFan 03-18-2006 08:52 AM

Bennett has a lot of speed which is something that always helps an offense, if Sean and company can get him back to form and stays healty he could be a big play maker for us.
I like the move.

turbo_dog 03-18-2006 09:11 AM

This signing makes me very, very happy. Bennet is a speedster. In fact, I think he was a track star at Wisconsin. Aside from that, he has some nice vision, and for him to be a third down back behind Deuce is really a threat for our offense.

gandhi1007 03-18-2006 10:58 AM

Just so everyone knows how fast Bennett is, he was the fastest guy clocked at the 2001 combine w/ a 4.31 forty time. Other notable RBs that year & there times as follows: Correll Buckhalter-4.50, Travis Minor-4.44, Anthony Thomas-4.54, LaDainian Tomlinson-4.42.

Here's the link:

LongTimeFan 03-18-2006 01:23 PM

He's known for olympic style speed, best thing about him is that he has after burners so if he gets in the secondary lookout, he has a lot of potential.

fatz6179 03-18-2006 01:34 PM

he has to get there can he run fools over? no. Speed goes with age ask deion and as for him getting the ball more than Stecker never.

LongTimeFan 03-18-2006 02:06 PM

Fat, do you like any players on the team besides the joker (Brooks) we HAD, become a Falcon fan because your sure don't sound like a Saints fan,

fatz6179 03-18-2006 02:09 PM
