Anthony Simmons

i saw we signed him, but i don't know that much about him.

i know he played for seattle and the name sounds familiar, but he is not on nfl.com. has he been out of the league for a few years?

RE: Anthony Simmons

no, he was injured all last season, but he's a pretty good linebacker when healthy- i think one year he had like 142 tackles, 4 sacks, and an interception.

RE: Anthony Simmons

He missed last year with a broken wrist. He is a monster at mlb he has good size and speed. Instantly our best lb in my opinion and he is good in coverage. Nice signing

RE: Anthony Simmons

I hope this isn't our answer for a LB. What has this guy done lately?

CheramieIII 03-17-2006 07:25 PM

RE: Anthony Simmons

I don't think he is. Just at MLB with Mckinnon backing him up, Fujita and Hawk on the outside.

RE: Anthony Simmons

You think we're going to get Hawk instead of D'Brick. I'm also hearing Mario Williams which I don't understand.

RE: Anthony Simmons

This is a very good pickup. He's a solid tackler with good size and speed. Think back to those games we opened up with Seattle and the kicked our buts. He played and played well.

LKelley67 03-18-2006 09:30 AM

i'm sure the FO has done DD on the guy. He was a first round pick, very solid. injuries have just been the story. Him at 75% or making 75% of the season will be a definite upgrade. welcome aboard sir anthony.

besides the open checkbook there has to be some momentum to FA signings. Good buzz about Payton's program and something fresh starting down here that a lot of players wat to be a part of.

CheramieIII 03-18-2006 10:01 AM

I think it's either Brick or Hawk at this point with the possibility of a trade down with Oakland or Denver. I know everyone's thinking why Denver, well the snake hasn't gotten them to the game yet and Denver may surprise everyone by going after Leinart. He fits the John Elway mold, period.

BJSim 03-18-2006 10:06 AM

Cher, the trouble with Denver is all about Cap Space and not having any. They feel their team is in good position and could actually do without a first rounder this year. I'd love to see a trade down a few spots to either 4 or 6 and with this year's 2nd and the extra first for next we'd get in the trade, pick up Denver's 2 firsts this year.

You guys are SLOWLY moving me off the draft Leinart bandwagon, but I still think he wouldn't be a bad pickup for the future.

FanNJ 03-18-2006 10:32 AM

Please no comparisons between Elway and Leinart.

I still say take Cutler.

LKelley67 03-18-2006 10:59 AM

with our history and being the 2nd worst this year I would bet Denver would trade one of their firsts for our 2007 1st rounder. do it loomey baby.

don't count NYJ from still moving up 2 spots to get who they want. if abraham departs super mario might be their goal. let's say we get just their 2nd rd this year and do the above denver move...

...........PLAN A.....................................PLAN B
#04- d'brick OT................................ hawk LB
#22- willaims or cromartie CB...........winston OT
#34- carpenter or ryans LB...............youboty or joseph CB
#35- wroten DT................................wroten DT

TheDeuce 03-18-2006 02:09 PM

I think this is a pickup that could be good, and could be worthless. I think that if Simmons can stay healthy, which it seems he's had some trouble doing, then he will be a very good upgrade over our current LBs. If he stays healthy, he has shown that he's a guy who's going to get 100+ tackles every year. The key however, like it is now with our two biggest addition thus far in Brees and Bennett, is that these guys can be GREAT additions if they stay healthy. So here's to Anthony Simmons' health.

TheDeuce 03-18-2006 02:10 PM

And LKelley, I like both of those plans (except for the CBs being taken so high), but come on homeslice, you know we still need a center right? And Mangold will be there so.....

fatz6179 03-18-2006 02:10 PM

Simmons could be wut we've been lacking personally he looks like a hardworker and we all love hardworkers, cuz talent only goes so far

TheDeuce 03-18-2006 02:26 PM

" Simmons, a former first-round pick, missed last season because of a serious wrist problem. He's considered one of the fastest linebackers in the game."
- From ESPNInsider

That sounds pretty good to me. I am really pleased with the efforts of our front office.

fatz6179 03-18-2006 02:33 PM

yeah they're good except the Brees thing he's damged goods with that shoulder

Y do you say that? he should be back to 100% by june, and he is better then what he had or have at the moment. id much rather take a chance on a guy who is coming off an injury then brooks, who is just terrible all the time

fatz6179 03-18-2006 03:11 PM

ok i'll remember that when Pees sucks

Williams to the Saints has been pushed by the media. John Clayton in particular.

It's a Best Available argument. The form of it is "if you have two pretty good outside linebackers, do you pass up drafting Lawrence Taylor?"

The guy is 295 lbs, 6'7", and has 4.6 speed.

Personally I'd still get Ferguson.

Back that up please. Brees' stats have be excellent the last two years. What evidence do you point to that makes you think that Brees is going to suck?

The only evidence he has is his sick infatuation with Brooks. He wants to haves teh but-seckz with him.

LKelley67 03-18-2006 05:31 PM

mangold is the only step in and start C IMO. he will probably get picked a little higher than he should as a result. i would be satisfied with a flanagan, mckinney, teague sort of pick up. draft one later and try to develop.

CheramieIII 03-18-2006 05:59 PM

I now think we will trade farther down then before. I think there will be some lineman in our draft at the end of the first round and beginning of the second. Justice and Mangold would be solid additions and could step right in as well as Jean-Gilles from Georgia.

Mangold is expected to be drafted in the late 1st. The only way we get him is to trade up from our second pick into the late first round, which would require us to give up our second and something else. Since we don't even have a third, I don't see how it's possible without relinquishing half of our draft. Doing anything with our #2 overall to trade that low in the first round is totally out of the question, not to mention unfeasible.

TAKING A CHANCE ON SIMMONS

The Saints have come to terms with veteran outside linebacker Anthony Simmons and that signing certainly brings the Saints a player who was a Pro Bowl performer.

The question is how much gas the veteran has left in his tank after sustaining a few injuries and sitting out the 2005 season.

Simmons has started at both inside and outside linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks and at one time ex-Saints general manager Randy Mueller picked him as the most underrated "big-time" player in pro football.

"If I had a vote I would pick Anthony Simmons," Mueller told me during a lunch near draft time in 2002. "Anthony has to be handled just right, but he has the whole package you want in a linebacker. He’s fast, instinctive, he thinks quickly on his feet and he has a knack for finding a way to wedge himself into angles to get to the ballcarrier. He’s also a real good cover guy. He plays the game with a chip on his shoulder and some coaches don’t understand this and may take him wrong. He is not a bad person at all, but he needs to be handled the right way and I wonder if that will happen now in Seattle."

Let’s hope that the same Simmons Mueller talked about in early 2002 has many of those same traits left in 2006 for the Saints.

Good article tigger, thanks for the post

saintsrule 03-20-2006 12:19 AM

I am sure they got the best LBer they could get. I hope he is healthy and can help the team. I would like the current young players to play more and get better.

FatiusJeebs 03-20-2006 09:28 AM

All this draft speculation is DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Isn't this fun? All I do know is that its good to see the Saints filling needs. Call them cheap but all this cap room is somewhat of a blessing this year.

WHODATNJ 03-20-2006 10:57 AM

For once we are making good decisions in Free agency. Brees going to have a year beyond anyones comprehension. Zack Hilton will emerge as a above average TE. Daunte and Horn if healthy will have a thousand yards each. Our running game with Duece and Bennet will be hard for any D to handle. Duece will pound the crap out of the D and Bennet will burn them with his speed and agility. For those of you who dont know it Bennet is dangerous and can break one at any given time. Simmons is a monster when healthy. Fujita is a no noncence get it done player. This is the same kind of free agency approach that created the monster in New England. I see a new Era in Saints football developing here. They are doing things that make sence. Imagine that. The only thing that I am concerned with is the O Line. I wonder what there plans are to protect our new golden boy.

FatiusJeebs 03-20-2006 01:29 PM

By the looks of things whodat.....if there are no major pick ups between now and draft day......we will draft Brick. Now....even with his acquisition.....we should do a little shopping.
