Tom Ashworth

Quote:

Ashworth crosses off Bucs
<Mar. 21> Despite spending a good part of last weekend engaged in contract talks, Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen and Ashworth's agent could not find common ground. Now it appears the free-agent right tackle will sign elsewhere.
"Bruce and I spent a lot of time talking over the weekend but their offer, quite frankly, was not very compelling," agent Tom Mills told the Tampa Tribune. "Bruce is not offering Tom a chance to be paid like a starter, and until that changes we have to continue to look around."

Mills' comments were made as Ashworth was headed to Seattle for a visit and preparing for stops in New Orleans and Houston. Ashworth has already met with the Jets and Dolphins.
This is kind of interesting. Here's a guy who's been a staple of the Patriots line for years now, and he's apparently visiting the Saints soon. What if we picked him up? Would we still want to draft Brick? Perhaps if we had Ashworth and Brown on the tackles, we could trade all the way down to as low as #7, get another draft pick, and still be able to get Hawk. Comments?

Interesting. But is it a good idea to move Brown to the left? He played well for a rookie, but this just adds another learning year to him.

wheelman 03-21-2006 05:54 PM

RE: Tom Ashworth

Brown is definitely athletic enough to play on the left side. I say go for it.

RE: Tom Ashworth

I believe the idea was that Brown would be groomed to replace Gandy eventually, although I'm not sure this quickly.

BJSim 03-21-2006 05:56 PM

RE: Tom Ashworth

If he is signed I think it truly means we'll draft D in the first round.

RE: Tom Ashworth

I have too much man crush on Brick at this point. I won't be objective about it. I'd rather Ashworth came as a backup and I'm sure he's not interested in that. But were we to sign him, I totally understand it.

RE: Tom Ashworth

I think with Seattle needing a LT now that Hutchison is gone they might actually be willing to over pay for Ashworth. I don't want to get into a bidding war over this guy.

wheelman 03-21-2006 06:03 PM

RE: Tom Ashworth

Hutchison is a guard.

BrooksMustGo 03-21-2006 06:04 PM

RE: Tom Ashworth

Seattle still has Walter Jones at LT. Unless the pick up someone like Davin Joseph from Oklahoma, don't expect Shaun Alexander to be rushing leader next season.

saintswhodi 03-21-2006 06:35 PM

I love it Deuce. GET ASHWORTH. That way when we trade down, it's HAwk or Ngata and some much needed D help. Then get Mangold with the second pick.

lonewolf 03-21-2006 06:39 PM

1) Hawk-LB, Ohio State

2) Whitworth-OT,LSU

2) Wroten- DT,LSU

3) Skyler Green-RS,LSU

Fellow Tigers fan? lol

Speaking of which, I am gonna go check out the ladies in in the reginals this weekend. Should be fun.

lonewolf 03-21-2006 06:58 PM

Ooops, change that 3rd pick. Make that 3rd the best Center on the board, we can get Skyler in the 4th. He had a poor combine I think.

gandhi1007 03-21-2006 07:06 PM

If we sign this guy & make a trade with the Jets, our draft could look like this in the 1st two rounds:

#4-A.J. Hawk
#29-Nick Mangold
#34-Claude Wroten

I agree and from the Jets we will get an extra 1st rounder and maybe more. If we trade to number 6 or 7 we could end up filling all of our needs in the first 3 rounds of the draft and I love the Hawk pick.

lonewolf 03-21-2006 07:16 PM

Are you guys forgetting who's pocketbook we are dipping into? No way will the Saints accept (2) number one's this year. They couldn't afford to pay them.

They'll accept, a extra first and 3rd this year and 1st next year.

lonewolf 03-21-2006 07:17 PM

oops meant extra 2nd this year and 3rd along with a first rounder next year.

LivnaLieTimay 03-21-2006 07:20 PM

Wait, Cher, you want the Saints to draft Hawk? huh, that's new news to me, hahaha. Anyways, I'd like to get Ashworth. He's relatively young and comes from a winning franchise. If we got him I'd probably jump on Cher's bandwagon and say draft Hawk over Brick.

wheelman 03-21-2006 07:23 PM

I just had an idea. What if they sign Ashworth, and move him to guard? Just a crazy thought.

CheramieIII 03-21-2006 07:23 PM

It's OK Timay, I've got a big bandwagon. They are beginning to believe!

BJSim 03-21-2006 07:25 PM

Cher... I'm just now starting to accept a move down. Don't expect a change from D'Brick right away. :-)

LivnaLieTimay 03-21-2006 07:28 PM

Yeah, BJ, it took me a while to get off Leinart. I'm not excited about it but I'll accept it. Then I wanted Brick, now I'm thinking Hawk, I just can't make up my mind!

It's ok guys, don't be afraid, the Hawk will protect us all! :biggun:

wheelman 03-21-2006 07:36 PM

What position would he play? We already have a strong side and weakside linebacker. Can he play in the middle? I used to think that he is a middle linebacker, but I later found out he plays on the outside.

Yeah, I wanted Matt too. Brees is still a major upgrade from AB. If we can pull off the "1999 Ricky Deal" with the Jets & snag the aforementioned names in the 1st two rounds & target talented athletes in the later rounds, I'll be just as excited. :D

Hawk's already better than anything we have on the outside. Or inside, for that matter.

Most definitely he can play the middle. He is not only the best LB in the draft, he is the most versatile. Hawk or Ngata, I would not be mad at either, but I am definitely leaning to Hawk.

LivnaLieTimay 03-21-2006 07:40 PM

Yes ghandi, I'm with you on that. Not getting Leinart sucks but loading up on draft picks to fill holes on our team is exciting as long as Brees' shoulder holds up... if it doesn't then I think we made a mistake passing on Leinart, only time will tell...

TheDeuce 03-21-2006 07:56 PM

Ngata is good, but he definitely isn't worthy of a top 5 pick. What I'm worried about at this point is that we're going to be so scared that somebody (probably the Jets) will take Brick if we try to trade down, and we're going to end up taking Brick with the #2 pick, not get any extra picks, and have only one two more picks (#34 and a 4th rounder) left on the first day with a lot of holes to fill. I think Ashworth, right now, would be ideal. He would allow us to trade down, not worrying whether or not somebody's going to take Brick, and then we could get Hawk, maybe Mangold, maybe a DT, maybe a CB, or maybe another OT if we want some insurance....

wheelman 03-21-2006 08:11 PM

Well, I guess Hawk is our guy then. Hey, no mods tonight.

*rubs hands together*

heh heh hehhhh

LKelley67 03-21-2006 08:30 PM

I have posted threads about the value of trading down and am a big proponent of it. I think to #4 and even again to #7 would be even better. Get extra picks in the first 2 rounds of this draft I think will be even better than most.

i think Ashworth would be fine even with D'brick too. We need some depth and i wouldn't be disappointed say adios to Old man Time Gandy. Anybody hear anything about Stinchcomb?

TIGERSAINT31 03-21-2006 08:35 PM

A.J. Hawk sounds good to me. I like the way he plays the game hard and nasty. Besides the fact that he has a cool name

wheelman 03-21-2006 08:37 PM

Don't forget Brady Quinn's sister. :D

TIGERSAINT31 03-21-2006 08:39 PM

She is HOT!!!

Well considering this website is essentially dedicated to Louisiana sports, what's so surprising about that?
