Ashworth crosses off Bucs
<Mar. 21> Despite spending a good part of last weekend engaged in contract talks, Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen and Ashworth's agent could not find common ground. Now it appears the free-agent right tackle will sign elsewhere.
"Bruce and I spent a lot of time talking over the weekend but their offer, quite frankly, was not very compelling," agent Tom Mills told the Tampa Tribune. "Bruce is not offering Tom a chance to be paid like a starter, and until that changes we have to continue to look around."

Mills' comments were made as Ashworth was headed to Seattle for a visit and preparing for stops in New Orleans and Houston. Ashworth has already met with the Jets and Dolphins.
This is kind of interesting. Here's a guy who's been a staple of the Patriots line for years now, and he's apparently visiting the Saints soon. What if we picked him up? Would we still want to draft Brick? Perhaps if we had Ashworth and Brown on the tackles, we could trade all the way down to as low as #7, get another draft pick, and still be able to get Hawk. Comments?

Interesting. But is it a good idea to move Brown to the left? He played well for a rookie, but this just adds another learning year to him.

Brown is definitely athletic enough to play on the left side. I say go for it.

I believe the idea was that Brown would be groomed to replace Gandy eventually, although I'm not sure this quickly.

RE: Tom Ashworth

If he is signed I think it truly means we'll draft D in the first round.

I have too much man crush on Brick at this point. I won't be objective about it. I'd rather Ashworth came as a backup and I'm sure he's not interested in that. But were we to sign him, I totally understand it.

I think with Seattle needing a LT now that Hutchison is gone they might actually be willing to over pay for Ashworth. I don't want to get into a bidding war over this guy.

RE: Tom Ashworth

Seattle still has Walter Jones at LT. Unless the pick up someone like Davin Joseph from Oklahoma, don't expect Shaun Alexander to be rushing leader next season.

I love it Deuce. GET ASHWORTH. That way when we trade down, it's HAwk or Ngata and some much needed D help. Then get Mangold with the second pick.
