Stallworth jailed in Miami Thursday, March 23, 2006 By Jimmy Smith Staff writer Saints wide receiver Donté Stallworth was jailed in Miami Beach early Saturday morning after police stopped Stallworth for having an expired tag on his 2005 Bentley, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday. Advertisement The newspaper, citing a police report, said police officer Erick Pagan stopped Stallworth at 5:05 a.m. in the 1200 block of Washington Avenue, which is near police headquarters. Stallworth handed Pagan his license, the report said, then tried to drive off. Detective Luis King asked Stallworth to step out of the car but he "refused by pulling away and tensing," the Herald quoted the report as saying. Further, Stallworth refused to shut off the automobile's engine and would not get off his cell phone, the report said. Officers charged him with resisting arrest without violence, cited him for the expired tag, towed the Bentley and brought Stallworth, 25, to jail. Calls to Stallworth's agent, Miami-based Drew Rosenhaus, were not returned Wednesday. The Saints, through spokesman Greg Bensel, said they were aware of the matter. "Our security department is looking into it," Bensel said via e-mail. "Our policy is not to comment about incidents that are under investigation." According to the police report cited by the newspaper, Stallworth complained about the arrest. "Defendant then stated this was going to cost us a lot of money, and that he would have our jobs," the report said. "Defendant further stated he knew the chief of police, and that we would be hearing from his lawyer." The newspaper said that Miami Beach police chief Don De Lucca said he doesn't know Stallworth. Calls to the public information office of the Miami Beach police department were not returned. |
