DT Cedric Woodard on a one-year contract

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I saw that we signed him on the Saints website. Anybody heard of him? http://www.neworleanssaints.com [/code]...

RE: DT Cedric Woodard on a one-year contract

Started for 4 years with the Seahawks. Was pretty good from the stats but missed 2005. Doesn't say why but more than likely an injury. Pretty good pickup it looks like.

Should add some solid depth to our DT position... he's no star but should be serviceable. I want some news on Leisle.

He was picked up by NO at the end of last season. No injury just was released and did not play. Not sure what to think about this one

RE: DT Cedric Woodard on a one-year contract

This is a very good pickup. Scouts, Inc. has him ranked higher than any other DT for the Saints at 71, and is the same grade as Kelly Gregg. He's not a star, but this should give us at least a guy who is bigger than Brian Young at 310, and could be our 2nd DT. He has very good size for a DT, and he should be able to stuff the middle better. Here's a scouting report:

Lacks COD skills once he gets in the backfield and does not show much closing burst in pursuit. Has a limited array of pass rush moves. Has trouble getting off of blocks as a pass rusher and doesn't show closing burst even if he gets penetration. However, Woodard is a big, powerful two-gap DT. He comes out of his stance low and keeps good leverage. He's disciplined and completes his assignment. At his best taking up space and occupying blockers. Uses his hands well and has a wide base.
From ESPN:

He is a wide-bodied tackle whose forte is defending against the run.

I like it too Cher, and here's something to think about:

I think this is another subtle example of Payton's competence and ability to make this team better. Our run defense has been horrendous recently, and a big part of it has been our lack of a big presence inside. What did Haz do about it? Nothing. What does Payton do about it? Goes out and signs a big DT who's specialty is stuffing the run. I think this, like maybe the Simmons signing or the Bennett signing, will show during the season that Payton has correctly evaluated the needs of tis team, and has gone out and addresses our needs with players who might not be the biggest names, but might very well be the best fit for this team.
