kffl.....jets not looking to trade up?

Jets | Team may not look to trade up
Tue, 4 Apr 2006 20:37:37 -0700

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports early word is that the New York Jets won't trade up to get USC QB Matt Leinart, and it's not out of the question for them to draft Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson over Leinart, if both are still on the board.

how would one read into this? smitty

They got nothing to loose here. i would not be surprised to see them take Vernon Davis at 4.

RE: kffl.....jets not looking to trade up?

if i were the jets i would stay put...
saints won't draft leinart
titans will draft young
jets can stay pat and still have a shot at leinart
if for some reason the titans do draft leinart they could still draft young or a large selection of other players.
for the saint's interest...i would love to see the jets trade up, but they would be foolish to do so.

If the Titans had the opportunity to draft Leinart over Young they'd do it in a second. You think Norm Chow would pass up on his boy for a guy who most NFL scouts won't be ready to start for at least an entire season? No. If Leinart is there at #3, he goes to the Titans.

Victor Green, arguably one of the best safeties in Jets' history, signed a one-day contract with the club yesterday with the intent to retire.

Green, who signed with the Jets as a rookie free agent out of the University of Akron, played with the Jets from 1993 through 2001. He broke into the starting lineup midway through the 1994 season and stayed there until his departure.

Green, a hard-hitting, ball-hawking strong safety, finished his Jets' career with 964 tackles (fifth all-time in franchise history) and 24 interceptions (third all-time) in 144 career regular-season games. He holds the club's single-season tackle record (207 in 1996) and was voted to the Jets' Four Decade Team in 2003.

He also played with the Patriots (2002) and Saints (2003) and didn't play the past two seasons.

"I'm grateful to the Jets' organization for giving me a chance 13 years ago as a rookie free agent and now I'm proud to retire as a Jet," Green said in a statement. "I enjoyed my time in New York, most of all, the Jets' fans ... and hearing the J-E-T-S chant. They know I gave everything I had each week."

Said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum: "Victor showed a tremendous instinct for being around the football and displayed a tenacity and fearlessness when playing the game. He should walk away from the NFL with his head held high."

Also, the Jets will hold a private workout with USC QB Matt Leinart the week of April 17. The club, however, is still believed to be leaning toward selecting either Virginia OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson and N.C. State DE Mario Williams with their fourth selection overall in this month's NFL Draft.

Dolphins: Miami quarterback Daunte Culpepper was cleared of misdemeanor charges stemming from a boat-party sex scandal.

A Minneapolis judge ruled there wasn't probable cause to determine a crime was committed by Culpepper, one of four Vikings accused of misdemeanor lewd conduct during the cruise last fall on a suburban lake. Culpepper was traded to Miami last month.

Titans: The team told Steve McNair they don't want him working out in its building until his contract is reworked, the quarterback's agent said. McNair was told to go home Monday when he showed up at Tennessee's headquarters for the start of the third week in the Titans' off-season conditioning program.

McNair, the NFL's 2003 co-MVP, is due $9 million in salary in 2006 -- but his salary cap number is $23.46 million. The Titans declined last month to pick up a $50 million option to stretch the deal through 2009, leaving McNair with nearly a quarter of their cap space.

Chiefs: Kansas City signed free-agent cornerback Lenny Walls, giving the club an experienced cornerback to play opposite Patrick Surtain.

Maybe we are considering drafting Leinart afterall . . . Who knows?

If we did draft Leinart would we keep him, are use him as tradebait. I just can't see Brees being to happy with Matt backing him up.

There are so many things than can happen and a lot of teams blowing smoke right now, trying to set the stage for the big day. You also have to be careful with the media and reading the reports... they have an agenda as well, build anticipation so mucky mucks like us tune in... and stay interested until then. So one day yeah the Jets will move up... the next Jets will stay put... the next they could trade down... thats 3 plus days of reporting on one team, lol.

xan 04-05-2006 11:38 AM

This is all a negotiating ploy. The less interested you are, the less you have to give up. Ya'll remember Mike Ditka?

patdog 04-05-2006 11:57 AM

Please whatever you do, don't bring Ditka name up. I get a rash everytime i hear it.

xan 04-05-2006 12:03 PM

I hope that rash isn't where I hope it isn't...what WAS your relationship to Iron Mike?
