Jimmy Smith, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said the move of OT Jammal Brown to left tackle wasn't an experiment. "No, no, no, no. It's permanent," Payton said. "I know there'll be a lot speculated about the draft and how that move pertains to Jammal. But that move to left tackle is permanent."


I guess I was right all along and it's Hawk we're after!

Sean Payton is quoted saying that Jamal Brown will be playing left tackle this season no matter what happens in the draft. Surely we wont use a top 5 pick in the draft for a right tackle, would we ???

No way a lot of good RT in the draft and jon can do it with mayberry and a pick.

I'm still not believing it. I think we will still draft D'Brick, and this is just more pre-draft posturing. Why would a coach make such a crucial decision in early spring camps???? Furthermore, I think Hawk at #2 is too high. Call me crazy but I would RATHER have Williams than Hawk. Last time our D was good(in '00) it was due to a dominant D-line, Linebacking corp had that same group of nobodys we've always had.

Yes, but the most dominating defense we've ever had was lead by 4 guys at the LB position by the names of Swilling, Jackson, Mills, & Johnson. We called them the Dome Patrol!

OK...what does the Dome Patrol have to do with the here and now? That era was 13-15 years ago. NFL offenses have evolved significantly since then. In the process the 4-3 has proven to be far and away the most reliable D set there is. There's a reason that 90% of the league primarly runs a 4-3. Our current personnel favors a 4-3, so we should build in that direction, not continously look for an excuse to go back to the 3-4. The only D that has run consistently in a 3-4 with success for any length of time nowadays are the Steelers, and they have had the longest tenured coach in the NFL. He thouroughly knows his players and coaches.

To recreate the Dome Patrol today would require too much time to retool the entire D....as well as coaches that are competent enough to run it. As a first year coach, Payton just needs to be concerned with fielding the best team. We are close to being a good D as it is. We just need to fill a couple more slots.

Because no matter what, that defense (the Dome Patrol) set the precedent of defensive play for this franchise.

This part I agree on. With the personnel we currently have on the team. This would be our fastest fix. Simple help at the DT spot could help this team tremendously, but getting a stud LB to go along with role players like Fujita & Simmons could also do the same. Not to mention, playing the 3-4 would not be so much of a stretch, should we get that stud LB.

Huh? Didn't that 2000 Ravens defense play alot of 3-4? Doesn't that current Lovie Smith defense in Chicago play the 3-4 alot? And what about those 3 time Super Bowl champion Patriots-Didn't they play in a 3-4 formation? If the leaugue is 90% 4-3 oriented like you said, why are there always 3-4 defensive teams always in the top 5 defenses in the league? A defense is what you make of it from the personnel on your roster. Some teams, like Carolina, will reap more rewards by playing the 4-3 because of their peronnel. On the other hand, some teams like Pittsburgh & New England have teams more suited to run the 3-4.

The Patriots use a 3-4...as do the Ravens. I wouldn't call those defenses "chopped liver". The key to a successful 3-4 is the d-line, particularly the nose tackle. And if Johnathon Sullivan likes to eat I say let him and let's see if he can be the lump in the middle that can draw the doubleteam.
