Payton the QB guru right?

Hey everyone,

I was ruminating on Payton's career with QBs. Particularly in terms of how he has spent a career getting very good results from average guys.

For example, Kerry Collins took the Giants to the superbowl while working with Payton.
Payton got very good results with 3 different QBs in 3 different years with the Cowboys--Carter, Vinny and Bledsoe.

Is there a QB in the draft that it would be good to pick up just to see what Payton could get out of him? In particular, I'm curious whether Payton is the guy to turn someone like Cutler into a big time player? Then we could trade down and have a slew of picks and a premeire talent. Or if Payton could accelerate Vince Young's learning curve (honestly guys, he even made Qunincy Carter look servicable). Or if Payton could make a late round pick into a franchise player.

Any of them i guess. that is his thing. I look at brains as his key factor. he has never really picked the QB he wanted, so this could be fun. I think no QB until the 7th. or FA.
Brett Basanez QB 6'1" 220 NORTHWESTERN
Jeff Mroz Yale 6-5 230

Mroz is an interesting prospect to me too. I just did some looking into him after seeing the SI article this morning. I wonder who Payton would have ready first--Mroz or Amac?

I voted for Vince Young just because of that Quincy Carter comparison, BMG. I really hope we don't take a QB, and especially VY, but I think it'd be interesting to see what he could get out of Vince. I'm also glad that Brooks is gone, but I thought it would at least be interesting to see what he could do with AB.

But I am really excited to see with a GOOD quarterback. If he can turn average quarterbacks into 3000 yard passers, then I can't wait to see what he's going to do with a guy who is already a 3000 yard passer.

I saw Mroz in action last year against Princeton. He made a ton of mistakes. It never occured to me that I might be watching a prospective professional quarterback.

I picked OMar Jacobs, but I wanna change it to Brodie Croyle.... well, I would like to see either one. Mainly because we can use a lower pick on them, and if they produced it would be like YAY, and if not than we can say we didn't use a high rounder on them.

We won't be bale to use a lower pick on Croyle. He'll go in the second round.

True, but he won't be used with our first rounder, thats all I really care about... not using our first on a QB.

Interested to see what he could do with Brooks? BLASPHEMY!!!!! Yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck.

Who defiled this site with "he who shall not be named"? Make that person wear a Vikings uniform for the rest of the season.

zachsaints52 04-28-2006 01:51 PM

Or a Johnathan Sullivan?

papz 04-28-2006 04:43 PM

I guess we'll find out if he's a guru or not if Leinart can take us to the playoffs next year. 8)

Croyle is alot like most of the other QBs he has coached so I went with him.

pakowitz 04-28-2006 04:47 PM

playoffs? playoffs?

LoL... anyway... i dont think we will be close to the playoffs next year... i think the best we can hope for is 8-8... we have a pretty tough schedule and our team has way to many holes no matter what rookies we get... we will be installing new offenses and defenses and we have alot of new players.... its a rebuilding year my friends....

papz 04-28-2006 04:51 PM

You'll be surprised... on offense all the talent is there. On defense we made big strides last year... I think it definately can happen. If our O-Line can give Brees enough time, I can see it happening this year much less next.

i just dont see it... we had what... 4 wins last year? and ur hoping for the playoffs.... we are in the toughest division in the league i think the best record we could hope to get is 8-8 but i really think we will be more like 6-10...7-9 if we are lucky

TheDeuce 04-28-2006 05:06 PM

3 wins pak. And I think with our division, you're right, the playoffs are out of the question. But hey, I don't think anybody thought the Bucs would be in the playoffs last year...

mighty12 04-28-2006 05:08 PM

It isn't that I am hoping for the playoffs I believe in the playoffs, why? Because I am a disillusioned fan. I believed we could make it when Danny Weurfful, Billy Joe Hobert, and Billy Joe Tolliver were at QB and they were playing the carousel. Does that mean they WILL make it, no, but if they do everyone will look back and say "Remember that guy who posted on here saying there is no way we get more than 8 wins, what a maroon."

It is quite different when you say that you believe it could happen, because then at the end of the season you can make excuses, you can't do that when you say it won't happen.

papz 04-28-2006 05:17 PM

Any given Sunday... we lost 6 games last season by 7 points or less. We always put up a good fight and play better against our division rivals. Maybe to you it's wishful thinking but I find it hardly far-fetched. Also now that Brooks is out of the picture, and we might finally get consistent quarterback play, I like our chances in our division. The way I see it, Grant rebounds, Smith gets 10 sacks, Bullocks becomes a big playmaker in our secondary to go along with the already solid D. Smith and Mike, and we have a solid team that's ready to compete for a playoff spot. Not to mention the Superdome will be rockin' next year... the 12th man is back.
