About Time For the Hour By Hour Threads

Draft applecart swings again… What is the old saying: “If you can’t figure out how the top of the draft is going to go, wait ten minutes because it will all have changed anyway… certainly appears to apply to the 2006 version of the draft. Obviously, if New Orleans goes with D’Brickashaw Ferguson with the second pick and the New York Jets take Maryland TE Vernon Davis with the 4th pick, as has been rumored, then indeed the top of the board could have quite a different look than expected. That, for example, would put Green Bay in a position to possibly have a shot at NC State’s Williams, which might preclude them from trading out of the #5 slot, unless someone absolutely blew them away with an offer they couldn’t refuse. The way things appear to be evolving may also have an impact on Oakland. There has been speculation that the Raiders might consider trading up to get either of QBs Matt Leinart of Southern Cal or Texas’ Vince Young, however, in a Ferguson to the Saints, Davis to the Jets scenario, it is much more likely that one of those two QBs would drop all the way to the 7th selection. The Raiders only concern in that scenario would be that possibly one of Detroit at #9, Arizona at #10 or St. Louis at #11 would deal with San Francisco at #6 to jump ahead of the Raiders to get the QB still on the board. St. Louis, for example, has been rumored to be talking with Buffalo about a move up to the 8th spot to select Vanderbilt’s Jay Cutler, the third of this year’s top QB trio, while the Lions have also not ruled out taking Cutler with the 9th pick. However, if either Leinart or Young came into range at the 6th pick, either or both the Rams or Lions, as well as the Cardinals who also need a developmental QB behind incumbent starter Kurt Warner, could set their sights higher. Meanwhile, down at the bottom of the first round, Chicago, which has the 26th pick is sending out signals that the Bears, with only 6 total picks, might be willing to trade down, while defending super Bowl champion Pittsburgh, with 10 overall selections, may be in the mood to try and move up.
