What r they thinking

They traded in 2nd round. Now they trade in 4rth for an over-the-hill player. John Clayton said that they are now trying to trade Dwight Smith away. WHYYYYYYYYYYYY

RE: What r they thinking

This was on ESPN Insiders this morning regarding our lovely 2nd rd pick:

43. New Orleans Saints
The pick: Roman Harper, DS, Alabama
Scouts take: Taking Harper here isn't a good move. The Saints have far greater needs, and Harper doesn't have great upside. Though he is smart and plays with a non-stop motor, he doesn't have great athletic ability or size. If New Orleans wants to start grooming a possible replacement for the inconsistent and aging Jay Bellamy, drafting a safety with more potential would have made more sense.

We give Philly this OG

and select a Div II player;

This makes no sense at all...even if we got the DT.

Damn, I know it is early, but I am going to start dipping into the George Dickel!

Rsanders24 04-30-2006 11:11 AM

All he could do was 20[b][u] reps @ 225 and we passed on a beast so that we could get a DT that has maybe one good year left? :patos: They must be using one of those magic 8 balls to make their decisions for them :nutkick:

papz 04-30-2006 11:16 AM

He's going to be one of those hidden gems for us.

:boohoo:

If I learned anything this draft, when it comes to the Saints, always expect the unexpected.

Saintsfan66 04-30-2006 11:18 AM

I realy dont give a darn about what the scouts say, they are often way way wrong. I also dont care who benched what, it doesnt tell me anything about what they do on the football field.. However, why we gave the eagles that pick and missed out on a lineman is rediculous. I've overlooked it, like the Saftey move, but WTF? I'm not going to let it bother me, I am just hoping that the coaches and Loomis are outsmarting me and everyone else... Since I havnt seen this coaching staff involved in drafting before, I dont realy know.. but... I'm a little confused, especialy with this last move.

pakowitz 04-30-2006 11:24 AM

well would u rather have a high profile player who underachieves or a no name player who over achieves?

Rsanders24 04-30-2006 11:30 AM

I don't think they really wanted to draft anyone. Hell, we could have just traded all of our picks for veteran players and called it a Draft!

papz 04-30-2006 11:33 AM

I'll take the under achiever who over achieves who is also drafted in the correct slot.

BrooksMustGo 04-30-2006 11:36 AM

What are they thinking? Probably the same thing I am....

4-12

Euphoria 04-30-2006 11:45 AM

I think they are going to move the 4th round OT we got to saftey...

D_it_up 04-30-2006 11:45 AM

I'm not going to say this is a complete waste of a draft just yet. The 4th round trade intrigues me. We get a proven veteran (though he's 32 years old) and an OT (even though from a small school) who could be something special with some good coaching. The 2nd round pick is what really threw me off, though. I was totally blindsided by the Harper pick. I was glad to get Faine, but drafting another safety was definitely confusing, because I know he was NOT for a need or the BPA.

biloxi-indian 04-30-2006 12:17 PM

I sure hope Gibbs is equal to his billing as a great defensive mind, because he is going to need it with all these UNDER ACHIEVERS with potential. Sounds a lot like PROJECTS to me.

Back to the George!

D_it_up 04-30-2006 12:21 PM

I am definitely noticing a trend with these picks, though. If we all recall under the Haslett regime, he focused so much on team speed and more team speedl, but the majority of them had a tremendous lack of game-time smarts. The guys we've selected after Bush all seem to have the same traits of being smart players. I keep wavering on what I think about these choices, but this could eventually be a good thing.

BoudinSandwich 04-30-2006 12:31 PM

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you can't execute the scheme, you lose. One of our biggest problems the last couple of years was poor execution.

I'll take a smart, consistent player over some dumb, bumbling, athletic-freak anyday.

jnormand 04-30-2006 12:33 PM

I think Hollis Thomas was a good move. The guy has a lot of upside. He is getting up there in age, but I think this coaching staff wants to win this year. I think they wanted to get some guys on board that will start helping this season. Bush, Thomas and Faine are not projects. They are players that can come in and help now.

biloxi-indian 04-30-2006 01:06 PM

I wonder why Faine and Thomas are second on their respective team dept charts. I hope they can HELP now. :?:
