RE: Pompei on how we
Good article. It will be very interesting to see some of the new formations and motion plays and things of that nature that Payton institutes. I'm also curious to see how many mismatches Reggie is really going to be able to make for opposing defenses.

He is a matchup nightmare for defenses. Just being on the field makes Deuce a better player and he allows Horn and Stallworth to get less attention when he is split out. I cant wait.

I must admit, though. Brees rehab, health and stability is a big concern for me. 8) |

It is fine to say that we'll use them in the same backfield, it is quite another to implement such a scheme. This isn't Madden Football. I like the idea of the two together, but the only thing I heard that made me think it might be successful is the comparison to Holmes and Gonzales in KC. With the exception of forcing the defense to show their hand (and possibly the occassional personnel headache), unless both Duece and Bush can catch like Gonzales and Holmes, it really isn't that huge an advantage.
Also, Duece is CLEARLY most effective when he has a lead blocker. Don't you guys remember the whole 2TE fiasco? I guess, I'm not sold that the two will appear in the same backfield all that often, if at all. I think a better model would be the old Marcus Allen - Bo Jackson model that the Raiders employed. It was very rare to see both, but either was deadly. That kind of model is sufficient to really screw with defenders - imagine neither Bush nor Duece ever tired on any given play. I wouldn't want to practice for that combination. Damn. Just my thoughts. |
