Brees excited about recovery from shoulder surgery

METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees says he's so excited about the pace of his recovery from shoulder surgery that he has to be careful not to get carried away.

Brees underwent surgery in January to repair a ring of cartilage that stabilizes the ball-and-socket joint in his throwing shoulder, and is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.

Though still limited, he is throwing short and intermediate passes during portions of the Saints' weekend mini-camp.

"I'm not doing any of the team drills right now because that's when you stop thinking about everything else physical, and you just go and play and react," Brees said, "and I'm afraid that I'd get out there and try to hose one in there when I'm not supposed to. Not like it would hurt me, but probably not the smartest thing."

Brees threw in practice Friday morning but not in the afternoon practice. He followed the same routine Saturday and was scheduled to throw in Sunday's only practice. Brees said the shoulder felt better Saturday than it had Friday.

"I was wondering how it was going to feel and it felt great," Brees said. "I'm still limited in what I can do. I can't throw the ball more than about 30 yards, but it's nice to be able to get in there, call plays, go through the routine as you're walking up to the line. I'm getting back in the swing of things like I would on game day."

Brees was scheduled to begin throwing June 1, but started in May. He'll continue to increase his workload until training camp begins in late July.

"When I first kind of got the whole prognosis and protocol for my off-season rehab and everything else in January, they said that as long as you're ready for training camp," Brees said. "To be able to participate here at the beginning of June -- that's where I wanted to be, but far ahead of maybe what the normal protocol would be."

Brees, a free agent who agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract to leave San Diego as a free agent in March, was Sean Payton's first major acquisition after being named Saints coach.

"He's been gradually increasing the amount of throws and the distance between the throws," Payton said. "Obviously he's not 100 percent. But we said from the very beginning that June 1 was our goal for team drills. You aren't going to see him throw any deep routes, but his rehab is going well. You just don't see him throw any fastballs yet, a couple change-ups, a couple sliders."

Brees said the medical staff has told him to pay attention to how his shoulder feels as he works out.

"They say, 'How does it feel? Listen to your body,"' he said. "I'm up to 35 yards now and it feels great -- just taking it slow, being smart. Really, when do I really need to be ready? By September 10th."

Everything I've read on Brees tells me he will be OK.
I'm sure Brees can't wait to get that first game out the way though..

I know he isnt the most gifted QB, but he carries that aura with him that this is his team and he is going to take charge. I love that about him. But watching him in action today, its clear he still has a ways to go. Either way, i look forward to watching him this year in the Dome.
