Saints trade Sullivan for wide receiver

Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com
Posted: 19 minutes ago

Just prior to the 2003 NFL draft, the New Orleans Saints traded a pair of first-round picks so they could move up and select Georgia defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan with the sixth overall pick.

Three years later, the Saints are sending Sullivan packing.

FOXSports.com has learned that New Orleans has traded Sullivan to the New England Patriots for wide receiver Bethel Johnson.

Sullivan quickly fell out of favor with new Saints head coach Sean Payton because he didn't show up on time to recent minicamp meetings.

Last season, Sullivan played in 15 games for the Saints, making 29 tackles.

Johnson appeared in 11 games for the Patriots in 2005, making just four catches for 67 yards and one touchdown.

RE: saints trade johnathon sullivan

never thought another WR. I have watched Bethal up here in NE. he can fly and one heck of a return man. HMM I guess the next move will be Henderson or Stallworth going. maybe both. Well we just saved some cap money to boot. Wonder if the beerman is on a shortlist? Where did you get the info?

From what i hear, Stallworth showed up late for practice on Saturday, and was kept from practicing as punishment ... then on Sunday he was limited to the amount of time he was ont he field. Some say he was seen stretching his shoulder a lot on the sidelines on SUnday. I think the writing is on the wall. One way to get on Payton's bad side is to be late and show disrespect to the rest of the team. I say Stallworth's days are numbered, unless he picks it up a notch and starts being more disciplined and showing up to practices on time. Too bad too, because I think Stallworth is capable of having a great year with Brees at QB.

Why for another receiver? CB, DT, or any part of the O-line would have filled a much larger void

We probably looked at what NE was willing to get rid of, and picked the best guy on their list. I am sure NE was not releasing any good linemen, On the bright side of things, just be happy we got anything at all for Sully because I really think that he would of been cut soon, and then we would of gotten nothing for him. Also be happy for all the cap room we freed up by dumping that loser, heartless SLOB of an excuse.

RE: saints trade johnathon sullivan

Calm down guys bethel is fast but he is not that great of a WR. here in NE he never really got the chance so I will give him a break but he is a heck of a KR. Only reason he did not return much last year is that Dewight was a mad man in the return game. Bethal was not as bold in not calling fair catches and poor at punt returns in nowing where on the field heis inside the 10 to let the ball go. but they did kick way from him on the kickoffs.
