Just an idea about Henderson

I had an idea today about Devery Henderson and was wondering what some of yall at the b&g had to say. What if........ the Saints traded Michael Bennett, and converted Henderson into the backup running back? It's my understanding that he was a runner who was converted to reciever at LSU anyway. His hands seem to be suspect from what I read, however, when he gets the ball in his hands he is dynamite. It would be a shame to let him get cut and picked up elsewhere, cause he's so talented. I remember him being a very fast, explosive runner when he was running the ball at LSU. If their willing to try McPhearson elsewhere on the field, why not Devery? When they trade Bennett they will need another runner anyway, and Henderson is a blazer. More thoughts please, thanks. (go saints!)

RE: Just an idea about Henderson

Devery is a little too light in the rear to be a RB. Unfortunately, his "stone hands" are going to get him cut at the WR position. Can you say Eddie Kennison? All speed....No hands.

RE: Just an idea about Henderson

lets say duce's knee does not hold up. what back field would you want?
Bush, Bennett, Stecker
Bush, Stecker, Henderson

Sorry I would not trade Bennett. Our LB are still better than last year. Hollis is an upgrade to sully. bite the bullet this year on D.
now if a ROT is there i would pause but still would not pull the trigger. give up a safty or WR first.
duce still needs to prove he can run on that knee. I do not want to see bush carring the ball 25 - 30 times a game. god help us if we have to rest our hopes on the pass game with the OL such a big ?

RE: Just an idea about Henderson

That's an interesting idea nedly. I mean if he isn't going to work out as a receiver, why not? Might as well make some use of his talents. He did drop a lot of balls at LSU when he was there and everyone knew he was raw as a receiver in college and when he was drafted. Or, we could trade him to another team that was high on him during that draft year. I'm pretty sure we'd be able to get a decent draft pick out of him if he doesn't pan out here.

I think he'll stay at the 3 spot until later in the season when Hass takes over. We still need depth at WR becuase of Horn and Stallworth's injury problems.

jrmllb 08-02-2006 06:58 AM

I think we will end up with Horn, Stallworth, Henderson, Haas, and Lewis on the roster...maybe even C. Horn or Lyman...Lewis will pick up return duties and wont see much play at WR at all....I think Lewis also stands a chance of getting cut if one of these recievers stands out as a returner in camp and Lewis is still riding that bike...I would hate to see him go but his 15 minutes may be over

he did have over 1100 yds recieving last year...hard to do that with stone hands...he is not great, but that is an unfair assessment.

henderson should be tried as a return man and 3rd down back...if it doesnt work out cut him

hagan714 08-02-2006 07:46 AM

henderson is goner

Joe Horn WR 34 6-1 213 11 Itawamba (MS) JC - big $$$ and age, but team leader
Donte' Stallworth WR 25 6-0 196 5 Tennessee - Next Year contract and alot of what if's
Jamal Jones WR 25 6-0 214 2 North Carolina A&T - camp surprise
Chris Horn WR 29 5-11 195 4 Rocky Mountain - payton brought him in, solid camp
Mike Hass WR 23 6-0 208 R Oregon State - hands, fan favorite and a good camp
Marques Colston TE 23 6-4 223 R Hofstra - still have trouble with the TE bit solid camp
Chase Lyman WR 23 6-4 210 1 California - glass but solid camp
Lance Moore WR 22 5-11 184 1 Toledo - NFL europe hold over, with a futures 2 yr deal
Devery Henderson WR 24 5-11 200 3 LSU - killing himself
for dual threat
Bethel Johnson WR 27 5-11 200 4 Texas A&M - cheaper and showing hands
Michael Lewis WR 34 5-8 173 6 None - big $$ and age, fan favorite

This is the group I can see packaging for a trade besides at Safties. Tough once you get past the top 2. this group will be the last and toughest group for cuts. hard to see many making it pass waivers to put on the pratice sqaud. That is how it works ?

What year did Kennison come in the league? 1996. How many big years has he had? 2. How many years has he led the league in dropped passes? The guy is one of the league leaders annually in the dropped passes category. :? Simply google Eddie Kennison passes dropped statistics & you will see countless hits. Hence, calling the guy "Stone Hands" would seem to me to be a fair assessment. :P As an LSU alumni, I hate to point out those kind of things. Hell....Xavier Carter was of the same mold. World class sprinter...no hands. Face it....both Kennison & Henderson couldn't catch a cold if they were butt naked, hiking in Alaska. They are both blazingly fast, though. :D

jergensl 08-02-2006 12:04 PM

but he still was a VERY productive WR last season...and in the NFL it is what have you done for me lately, so no one cares what his early career was like.

Fine.....Eddie had his best year as a pro last year. He still had 10 dropped passes & only caught 63% of the catchable balls thrown his way. Stallworth, who has been verbally abused on this forum, dropped 11 & had way more passes thrown in his direction (& they were thrown from an idiot savant). That's not here say.....that's stats. Now.... Marvin Harrison, on the other hand, had more balls thrown his way & only dropped one. So.....like I said, "Stone Hands" (early or late in his career).

DJLengai 08-02-2006 05:28 PM

I know Bethel's no superstar, but how are his hands? He didn't see much action with the Pats, but was it his hands or his attitude? If he can catch better than Henderson and they both have speed (and personality is about equivelant) maybe keep Bethel and lose Henderson?

papz 08-02-2006 05:32 PM

All Bethel was good for in New England was running in a straight line. If anything, it's going to be the other way around. I thought Devery did okay last year he's just having a bad camp. Hopefully he can get it together and he has a lot more to offer than Bethel does.

saintswhodi 08-02-2006 06:04 PM

Devery is gonna stick, and yes I am an LSU homer.

I sent him some stick 'um in the mail a couple of days ago. Watch. 8)

LongTimeFan 08-02-2006 06:40 PM

IMO DH's body wouldn't hold up well playing as a RB even if it's was just a few plays per game, we need his speed at the WR position, need well enough alone, we're ok at the RB position..

D24pick 08-03-2006 12:19 AM

Henderson at RB is foolish...This guy is small, he'll get crushed a few times and feel dead...He will make the final cut, at 3rd, too...Him and Has will share time alot for this yr, after Horn gets going next yr he'll emerge at #2...Remember in LSU, now in NO...Stallworth, #1 WR and Henderson at #2, and Hass at #3...They'll get the ball, Brees will have dynamite seasons with this team...

I'd keep DH over Bethel, but I'd also keep Bethel over Beerman as well...This is the same the Saints will do this yr, Bethel can catch, too...Deep or not, he'll burn you or dont forget he has lots and lots of hops...What does Lewis has on this youngster, nothing...Bethel can return KO's for TD's, and he can contribute on the offense...But seriously, DH will get those hands together this yr, like Marley said we had a dufus at Qb who ony focused on diffrent players...With Brees DH will get more passes and Endzone action, dont you know what he can do once he catches the ball, c'mon get off the mans back

shackney 08-03-2006 11:02 AM

actually a third reciever will likely include Reggie Bush in the slot quite often! I believe Payton will put the best 11 players on the offensive side of the ball and utilize Duece as the threat up the middle and break Reggie in. Payton will be in charge of the offensive formations and play calling...We are in need of O-line, but the offensive skill positions are in good order barring injury!

Dunn, Sproles, Parker... it's not that "foolish" of an idea. Henderson is going to make the team and he'll be our third or fourth... he's just throwing out another option if he doesn't pan out as a receiver.

LSUJeremy 08-03-2006 03:35 PM

Henderson was not a good RB in college. Fumbled often and didn't break many tackles. That's part of the reason he got moved to WR.

Putting him at RB in the NFL would not work. At all.

papz 08-03-2006 03:41 PM

Well he's not lighting the world on fire as receiver either... so if he doesn't work out, just cut him? I don't see anything wrong with experimenting and trying to get something out of him. Hell we're trying Adrian as a punt returner. And we wouldn't know if it would work or not until we at least tried now wouldn't we.

I think he's just trying to light a fire under him. I cannot see anyone starting opposite Horn besides Stallworth.
