Donte Stallworth: Struggling in New Offense

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Thursday, August 3, 2006
Update: Stallworth continues to battle injuries and is struggling trying to learn several positions in new coach Sean Payton's offense, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Recommendation: Stallworth was limited in the spring and summer after undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and sat out much of Wednesday after tweaking his groin. Furthermore, Payton grew frustrated with Stallworth on Tuesday afternoon when he didn't know where to line up, and quarterback Drew Brees had to direct him where to go. Stallworth continues to run with the second team offense behind Devery Henderson. Henderson has had trouble dropping passes however, so the Saints' second receiver spot remains up in the air.

"I'm trying to get more consistency and see him try to get better," Payton said of WR Donte' Stallworth. "He's made some progress. With a number of guys, we just need to see them keep getting better, and he's getting better."

Donte has all the skills in the world but maybe a little shy between the ears. Devery is a poor man's Donte it seems. If he can lock down the fundamentals he can be a solid starter in time. I like the looks and what I hear of Hass. Comparisons to Proehl and Chrebet abound, and the kid has soft hands and perfect routes. Just what every offense needs is a guy like that. Be hard to keep him off the field.

I really thought Donte/Devery were in for a big year when I heard we got Brees initially. Neither accept the hard pass well and Brees has a lot more touch on the ball than Brooks did. I thought this made for a better fit for them. Guess not.
