Fresh Edwards Trade Talk

Mike Detellier on WWL commented that he believes Edwards will be a Saint within a week. The Chargers have apparently backed off on the 2nd and will take less. He speculates a pick with a lesser player such as one of the young wideouts. Similar to the 7th + JT OSullivan for McKenzie.

Bobaganoosh 08-26-2006 12:12 AM

I trust Mike D...he knows his stuff. But at the same time, i just heard that the talks between the Saints and Chargers for Edwards have broken off. I do have a feeling that since the Chargers just locked up another one of their young LB's they are more willing, and if the Saints have another poor showing tomorrow, a deal will get done one way or another.

I also believe that the Chargers would have traded Edwards months ago when all of this started but they are holding on to him to spite him. When its all said and done, Edwards will play for the Saints this year.

Bobaganoosh 08-26-2006 12:14 AM

One more thing, adding Edwards would give us Fujita, Edwards, Shanle, Polley, Foreman, and Fincher...veterans mixed with youth...could be a good thing.

TheDeuce 08-26-2006 12:18 AM

I hope we can work something out, but I don't want to give up a first-day pick for him. The Chargers apparently denied our trade requests when we were offering a 4th rounder. If they do take the 4th for him, I'll be happy. However, a pick with a 7th and a crappy player would be nice too.

remember JT had some good hype around him at the time. Maybe they are show casing Closton?

Don't even go there! Colston is one of the best young talents we have at WR. Devery Henderson, Jamal Jones, Chris Horn......I could live with trading, but a 6'5"-230 lbs. receiver with exceptional hands, a 40 inch vertical, & a 4.43 forty time....you just don't trade away as a rookie. Especially when the kid has done nothing but impress since coming to camp. If we trade him or Hass before their rookie seasons, I'm boycotting the season. :(

wheelman 08-26-2006 02:31 PM

They could just trade a safety....

And we have our leading LB from last yr in Colby

And I did hear that the trade was off for now, and Carolina was after him

LKelley67 08-27-2006 10:40 PM

the Carolina buzz generated from this ESPN chat:

Ric ( Charlotte ): Jake Delhomme just restructred his contract today, freeing up $2.5mm in cap space for this year. Why would he do that at this point, are the Cats looking to make a move?

Jeremy Green: (4:22 PM ET ) Well, they need to find a LB (Diggs has another knee injury and he was replacing "spoon". I did hear this today from a pretty good source of mine. They have contacted the Chargers about Donnie Edwards' availability.

hagan714 08-27-2006 11:14 PM

if we got to get a bidding war with Caroline i hope we get some one with a better poker face. I would love to see us run the pick up and bail. cost carolina a day1 pick and a good player.

saintsrule 08-28-2006 12:19 AM

If the team believes they need him, I hope they get him over Carolina. Hass doesn't seem to do much, I don't know why people want to keep him on the team. The same with Zack. Conwell is playing the best. Even the fullback Karney is getting more throws.

LKelley67 08-28-2006 01:27 PM

One rumor that surfaced yesterday had San Diego inside linebacker Donnie Edwards landing in New England for a third-round draft choice. That only makes sense if the Patriots now believe Bruschi is going to miss a substantial part of the season or they’ve already realized Junior Seau isn’t going to contribute as much as they hoped.

The Chargers are set at receiver, but if a third team got involved it could work out for Branch and the Patriots. Until then, keep pinching your nose.

Hmmm

lumm0x 08-28-2006 08:04 PM

Perhaps the pick landed in the Stallworth trade was acquired just for this purpose? Wow, if we land Edwards we sure have attacked the LB position in a short time...

Rsanders24 08-28-2006 08:21 PM

True Edwards would be a nice plug but I would still much rather trade someone for a CB. Teams won't have to run the ball with "Automatic first down" McKenzie getting owned by good WR's! LB's and S's can't cover WR's but we sure do have alot of them.

LKelley67 08-29-2006 12:03 AM

Just in theory it sounds nice doesn't it?

Stallworth for Simoneau AND Edwards (via the acquired pick)

"Automatic first down" McKenzie
Is that what he was called last year?
I missed that.
ONE preseason game and MM is garbage?
Guys.
Please give it some time.
One word says it all....................
Preseason

"The Saints are expected to take the mid-round pick they acquired from the Eagles and go even harder after Chargers veteran linebacker Donnie Edwards, whom New Orleans has been making inquiries about for over the past week."

LKelley67 08-29-2006 09:06 AM

Nearly a month after suffering a back injury, Chargers linebacker Donnie Edwards yesterday returned to practice. Barring any setbacks, he likely will start Friday's exhibition finale at San Francisco.

Like getting another LB, could be a positive or negative sign about that.

LKelley67 08-30-2006 12:41 PM

heard that Kenny W on WWL said last night that people in the organization say the deal will get done this week.

yasoon 08-30-2006 12:54 PM

All for it as long as the ole "must pass physical" is in there.

At least the new brass seems to realize that LB needs attention.

Sources also said that Edwards and General Manager A.J. Smith spoke recently in a meeting requested by Edwards. In that conference, Edwards asked Smith to let him go to New Orleans.

I don't want Edwards, I want CB or OL help now. :brood:

LKelley67 08-31-2006 12:58 PM

I guess they are busy with the game today, haven't heard a peep. Anyone else? Tomorrow?

How bout predictions?

I'll say after the game SD takes the 4th from Philly or the other 4th with one of our WRs that was gonna be cut. If not, I think it is dead. The LBs will gel and they won't give as much for Edwards by the October trade deadline.

hagan714 08-31-2006 01:18 PM

they take the phili 4/3 pick. that would be dumb of us.
A straight 4 and a player(could hendersons be next?)
i do not agree but with all the wont die behind this the price will be up there.

Sarsippius 08-31-2006 02:32 PM

The latest rumor i am hearing from my sources is our 4th rd + Bouman for Edwards on Saturday. Saints want to see him in action and we want to showcase Bouman to lure them and keep from having to give up a 3rd or our new conditional. The thought of Bouman being gone makes me so happy i am tempted to offer a 2nd just to make sure they take him! =)

LKelley67 08-31-2006 02:52 PM

good sell job by payton... "neither Martin or Bouman has been eliminated yet"

uh, sources? not as good as bongo I presume

hagan714 08-31-2006 07:26 PM

draft 2007 1,2,3,3,4,5,6 will have to do. i wont go onto a beaten horse here

LKelley67 09-01-2006 08:39 AM

from the booth to the studio to mueller last night it sounds like this is still very likely.

other waiver wire moves fo sho too.
