Harsh Criticism for Stallworth Trade

IT'S HARD to quantify stupid, but dealing away a wide receiver the caliber of Donté Stallworth for Mark Simoneau and a conditional fourth-round draft pick is a pretty good place to start.

Yeah, Stallworth still might be on the ninth-grade side of immature. Yeah, he's in the final year of his contract. Yeah, he missed most of the Saints' offseason workouts making a turtle-slow recovery from arthroscopic shoulder surgery. And, yeah, he also missed the early part of training camp with a hamstring injury.

But giving him away for a special-teams player who you think can be your starting middle linebacker and a fourth-round pick? Are you serious?

If you're the Eagles, you're thanking God right now that there are people in the league as incompetent as Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and player personnel director Rick Mueller - people to whom you can turn when you realize, nearly too late, that Todd Pinkston is a wimp.

Throw in the fact that these two bozos also let Darren Howard waltz out of the Big Easy without a fight in the offseason and, well, Andy Reid and Tom Heckert might want to send them a nice thank-you gift if the Eagles make the playoffs, which is a much better possibility today than it was earlier this week.

"They just don't have a clue down there," an NFC personnel chief said. "I know they didn't think they were going to be able to re-sign him. But for crying out loud, you don't just give him away. This is a guy who caught 70 passes last season."

Funny you should say that, one of my friends is a big Eagles fan and called me to say THANKS FOR STALLWORTH, DONOVAN NEEDED HIM. He was actually the first person who told me anything about it.

While I'm not exactly thrilled with this trade I can at least say that the Saints got something for him unlike with Howard. Assuming he resigns with Philly and the Saints get a 3rd rounder, the trade isn't as horrible as it appears at first blush. Stallworth, for all his potential, is a drive killer because of dropped passes. Yeah, he caught 70 last year, but he should have caught 85.

Still, Simoneau even if he starts is going to have to show that he's worth the roster spot regardless of the pick received along with him. I liked stallworth and hate to see him go, but I think the team is better with WRs who can catch.

I wish we would've gotten better trade value for him, but I still think they made the right move. He would've walked, and we would've received nothing. Maybe the F.O. has learned something from letting D. Howard walk.

(Not much. But something.)

look this years trade market was set by McNair being dealt for a 4th. that screwed the season all up. Donte will sign, the eagles have a history of doing it. so that will be a 3. if in the begining you would have told Donte could bring more or even equal to trade value of McNair is would have never believed it.

The big downside of the trade is it puts a lot of pressure on Henderson and Colston. Plus if we have injuries at WR we could be in trouble. But playing Reggie more at WR might offset that ...

Henderson can catch as well as Donte, and may very well learn to run better routes. Donte was a tease...nothing against the guy, but we have his equal in Henderson, the question is do we have someone who will catch the damn ball to replace Donte with? From the looks of things we're gonna actually cut a few guys that can catch better. No loss here. Take the 3rd/4th and run like hell.

No one is saying that Donte doesn't have talent. Obviously no one gets to the NFL being a hack. The fact remains that he hasn't produced. He never came close to beating out Horn in training camp. Some can blame Brooks and true enough, Brooks was bad for him, but I do hold him accountable for his own performance for the most part.

There's no doubt he was probably the most naturally gifted reciever on our team. Stallworth had a chance to start all over with a new coaching staff. The fact that he got beat out by an 7th rounder means he wasn't even trying anymore. When it gets to that point i say get what u can get for the guy and cut your losses.

The guy that wrote this mentioned the Darren Howard trade. He lost all credibility right there. We were never going to keep him with Smith and Grant anyways. Our only mistake was not trading him a year earlier for at lesst a 3rd rounder.

I don't know how this turns out to be a mistake in any instance. If he turns into a Pro Bowler that doesn't mean that he would have done it here.
