New Additions and some for the PS

A day after the 53-man roster was set and a total of 22 moves over two days were announced, the Saints picked up five players from other clubs off the waiver wire and signed four others to the practice squad.

WR Terrance Copper (6-0, 207, Dallas), DB Curtis Deloatch (6-2, 210, N.Y. Giants), DB DeJuan Groce (5-10, 192, St. Louis), DE Michael Haynes (6-4, 283, Chicago) and T Rob Petitte (6-6, 327 pounds, Dallas) were all assigned to the Saints after the club claimed them on Sunday.

To make room for the five new players, the Saints terminated the veteran contracts of QB Todd Bouman and DE Tony Bryant, waived DB Anwar Phillips and T Ben Archibald and waived/injured WR Bethel Johnson.

The Saints also filled half of their eight-man practice squad on Sunday as RB Jamaal Branch, LB E.J. Kuale, WR Chase Lyman and DT Brandon Villarreal were signed after they cleared waivers. The other half of the eight-man practice squad will be announced on Monday.

Bye, bye Bouman! It looks like we are becoming Cowboys EAST!

biloxi-indian 09-03-2006 07:33 PM

Was Hass picked up by another club? I see Hilton was picked up by the Jets, but not too much else reporting.

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

Payton coached over there, and he knows the players

Omar Jacobs

We got Grouce, good and Deloach
Definite upgrade, Deloach has speed and that physicalness at CB for a frame of 6'2"

Bryant for Haynes isn't bad
Bouman for Jacobs, hell yeah
Phillips for Deloach, oh yeah

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

Why do you say we have Omar Jacobs? Or is that just wishful thinking?

biloxi-indian 09-03-2006 07:43 PM

and we got Cooper on the CHEAP....$385K

shrike3000 09-03-2006 07:44 PM

Why do we need Copper though? I thought we had a glut of WR talent...

biloxi-indian 09-03-2006 07:46 PM

Groce for $721,600...one year contract!

Cooper is a special teams player....I see Gleason on his way to the curb! Bellamy had not better be looking over his shoulder.

NEXT!

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

The rams must have tried to pull a quick one with the injuried/wavied tag on DB DeJuan Groce. if the hammie is good it is nice.
The Dallas group I will have to trust Payton. No warm fuzzies from the two.
I like the DB Curtis Deloatch (6-2, 210, N.Y. Giants), steady and has gotten better each year piayed. need some input from NJSaints on him.
hass was not p/u as of yet

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

when did we get jacobs-i thought he was signed elsewhere. I hope we resign phillips to the practice squad, and hass.

also..henson would be a nice third string qb...already knows payton's system.

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

I will be most upset if we don't pick up Hass for the PS if he clears Waivers.

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

bethel johnson was placed on the IR, he wasn't waived. i hate the way they worded it in the article, because it sounds like he was let go outright.

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

RE: New Additions and some for the PS

Quote:

Dejuan Groce
Notes: Last name is pronounced "Gross." High school sprinter who reportedly ran a 10.7 in the 100 meters. Redshirted in 1998. Played every game in '99 and had 24 tackles and broke up two passes. Saw action in 11 games and got his first two starts in 2000. Started 11-of-12 games in '01 and took over the punt-return duties. Posted 24-17 and his first interception in '00 and 31-14-3 in '01, when he also returned 33 punts for 469 yards and a touchdown. In '02, was named second-team All-American as a return specialist by the Associated Press and was on the All-Big 12 second team as a cornerback and punt returner. Started all 14 games (including the Independence Bowl) and recorded 38 tackles, broke up eight passes and intercepted four. Also returned four punts for touchdowns.

Positives: An all-around athlete who is very good in bump-and-run coverage. Is smooth with fluid movements and hips. He can change directions and pedal without losing much speed and can start and stop. Has good hands and ball skills, as well as good vision and balance in the return game. Covers a lot of ground in zone schemes and is a better cover man than former Nebraska teammate Keyuo Craver (now with the Saints). Has outstanding agility and responds well when beaten. Makes effort in run support.

Negatives: His size makes it difficult for him to defend bigger receivers and support against the run. Is a drag-down tackler. Needs safety help in deep zones. Smart, but can be lazy in film study and classroom. Gets out of position at times and will waste a step. Doesn't close as well as he could.

Summary: A first-day prospect because of his speed, versatility.

Jacobs was signed to the Steelers practice squad. We did not pick him up.

D24pick 09-03-2006 11:15 PM

I was sharing a wish

We still can get em off of their PS

Phillips is no good, Lay is way better than em
Phillips allowed too many TD's during the PreSeason

neugey 09-04-2006 05:19 AM

Groce was a good return man w/ Nebraska, hope he gets an opportunity to return here.

OK, we have a ton of DB's now and are short on LB's ... let's just make the nickel/dime our base defense. I say this with a straight face. Our LB's are not that fast and we need the speed on the field to compensate for it. Some of our DB's are fairly good tacklers. Or maybe we jsut pull an Urlacher and move our best safety to MLB ...

TheDeuce 09-04-2006 06:37 AM

How come nobody is praising Payton's move to let go of Bouman? Come on people, get excited!!!!! The worst backup in history has gone!

papz 09-04-2006 06:55 AM

... but I've always liked Bouman.

D24pick 09-04-2006 09:42 AM

Bouman getting cut was the best move ever!

Payton has been reportly keeping touch with Danny Clark off of KFFL

The return job on PR has been granted to Moore
On KR, DH, Cooper, Jones, or Bush???
Probaly Cooper, b/c Payton knows what this kid can do, and Dallas never blocked really well on KR, and we do so he'll probaly be better than his stats show

LKelley67 09-04-2006 09:57 AM

expect some veteran signings like Danny Clark after week 1. There some contractual issues/obligations that change if you sign a player before the season or after it starts.

D24pick 09-04-2006 10:37 AM

How bout nah!
