Payton ready to GO..............
"It's the first game of the season and my major concern is eliminating these things that keep us from winning games -- turnovers -- and producing some turnovers on defense," he said. "That was the one thing that concerned me throughout the preseason. That was what happened a year ago. If those things continue to happen, then regardless of scheme, player acquisitions or any of those other things, the result will be the same."

RE: Payton ready to GO..............
What i am looking for is seeing the staints o-line and the defense start to come together as a team. I am still waiting to see gibbs so called aggressive defense. Especially with the new additions at LB, i want him to take chances with a few more blitzes .........Last five years im tired of seeing teams convert on 3rd and 11.Also does the o-line have enough balls to convert on a 3rd and 1. Please Mr. payton i don't want you to calls plays that remind us of Carl Smith

I think Fujita, Shanle, Clark, and even Fincher have something to prove. No doubt Fujita and Shanle know of Gibbs schemes as they came from Dallas with Gibbs and Fincher had camp to learn them, but Clark will not take long to catch on. Their ability to stop the run is not a question in my mind, it is the ability to drop in pass coverage. God knows our corners will need all the help they can get from both safeties and LB's.
I also believe the defensive line will surprise (positively, for those who believe in the glass is half full) a lot of people. Like the OL, they will requre some playing time to gel, but I do not expect to see the same as last year! The corners, other than MM are suspect! I just don't think Craft or Thomas are the answer! I have no idea about the abilities of the new guys recently aquired. I read stuff, but have not watched either. |
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over, over, and over again...and expecting a different outcome!

Blitzing is great, but it also can cause some overpersuit against the run. Players have a greater probability of giving up a big play because they are out of position. Do you think we have the personell to run a defense with a lot of twists and dogs? I don't..I think you keep it as basic as possible unless you have a Pat Swilling, Derrick Thomas or Lawrance Taylor type lb'S. We needs Will Smith (The Ohio State University) and Charles Grant to get the pressure on the QB and keep our Lb's and Safeties in good position for turnovers! We just don't have the personell to send people!

I think a vanila defense could be the Saints downfall.

Agreed. We don't need vanilla, we need rocky road. I don't want the opposing offense to know what is coming. We've got to at least fake the blitz and least try to confuse the offense to create turnovers. Porter's INT of Culpepper in the 4th quarter last night was a perfect example. I'd rather get burned occassionally than go the bend-but-don't-break. All that does is wear down your defense and keep the other team's defense rested.
