Haslett gets an F
In this month's Football Digest there's an article that ranks all NFL coaches and rates them on a scale of 1-100. The grades are made up from 5 categories - Wins and losses, Personnel decisions, X's and O's, Player Development, and Communication Skills. Our Jim Haslett scored a 59-F and ranked 25th of 30.
Here's what they say - Wins and Losses: Haslett went from coach of the year in 2000 to a .500 record over the nexttwo seasons. His teams tend to self-destruct and are not disciplined enough. (13) Personnel Decisions: Circumstances beyond his control cost him some players, most notably Willie Roaf. He saw something in Aaron Brooks and Deuce McAllister, but he hasn't done much to help the defense, supposedly his strong suit. (15) X's and O's: Haslett appears to stray from game plans. He also hasn't demonstrated the ability to adjust on the fly (11) Player Development: Brooks, McAllister, Darren Howard, and Charles Grant are among those who have come on while Haslett has been coach. This is where he does his best work. (14) Communication Skills: Another area where Haslett started well, then plummeted. He seems to get distracted, a trait that filters down to the players. The only other coaches ranked below Haslett were Dick Jauron, Gregg Williams, Dave McGinnis, Steve Spurrier, and Mike Tice. That's bad company to be in. |

Well what else is new?
Did you see the article in that same issue by Tom Dempsey? Too cool... but let me just say damn Jason Elam, damn him! I really liked it best when Dempsey owned that record alone. Not b/c it was a Saints record, although that helped, but b/c I can\'t think of a guy more deserving. |

I had just gotten back into town from a business trip, and found it waiting for me in the mailbox. Had all of about 5 minutes to skim the pages before I had to leave again, but can\'t wait to read the Dempsey article.
